I could use some guidance here. I want to get the truck up to Canada to be worked on. But that is proving to be difficult when I am limited to 70 kmh and the right rear brake is still heating up. An OEM wedge actuator was replaced last year after the last one failed. A new brake canister was placed on the right rear side yesterday after it failed. I lifted the wheel off the ground today and spun the star adjusters so that the wheel could spin freely by hand. I had turned the star adjusters clockwise and that seemed to "release" the brakes more. But I'm still getting heat in the drum and cruising at slow speeds. I don't hear any loss of air pressure.

Any ideas from the more mechanically experienced?

I don't know the full history, but it is either not enough air to hold the spring "off" on the park brake, a slow leak applying brakes on the service brake side, or something binding up inside the drum.
I would use the test ports schreader valves on the top of the diff to start to try and solve it. There should be one for the service brake release, one for the left brake and one for the right brake. Try and stop somewhere and chock the wheels without applying the park brake, then see what pressure is on each of those valves with a tyre pressure gauge. If there is any pressure on the dragging brake then that would indicate a leaky valve somewhere in the system slowly applying the brakes. But if no pressure in there, then maybe it's some other mechanical issue.
There's also a chance the heat is caused by a failing wheel bearing, but if you can feel the brake dragging when you jack it up then maybe thats not the case.
Good luck!

Very good thoughts. But I ended up taking the heffalump back to BC and left it with Hans. I've actually wanted to have a MB truck expert go over it since I bought it. But has no luck with any of the US places. I live in, travel, and depend on the heffalump not just for housing. But to be able to get me to work contracts so I've been losing out recently. It was time to fold over to someone more experienced.

Left it at the lot where its size was overshadowed. It took a lot of work to get the heffalump up. Life has been a bit hectic with projects, some educational stuff, and negotiating work contracts. I ended buying a budget 3rd gen 4runner so I could have something to drive around in while we figure this out. This thing stunk pretty bad. A few bottles of febreeze were used while driving it. This morning I did a deeper clean and it's now airing out. The plan is is resell it when I get the truck back.

The heffalump is an ongoing project and sometimes it needs more work that my experiences can provide. Though a LOT has been accomplished these past 2 months, a lot more needs to be performed on the habitat side when it comes back. I also finally found a fabricator that is willing to swap out and improve the rusting frame that holds the generator and holding tanks. I will also want to start tackling and better organizing some of the electrical work when it gets back. 3 years have been spent exploring in it and I really want to get longer travels in it soon.

Small update.
The heffalump is still in Canada with Hans as he is sorting it out. He found the rear breaks needed to be adjusted but there is also an undiagnosed problem with the air system feeding the rear axel. This could be contributing to the problem with my parking brake valve and dragging brakes. He found that all injectors were failing, 2 were pretty bad. The truck has always smoked for me during cold starts but it sounds like that has all resolved with a new set of injectors. Luckily, the engine seems pretty healthy and is making good compression. He is going through the truck and has made other small repairs but at least the my primary concern has been resolved.

It's working out as we are committed to a 6 month work contract in Northern California and there is no room on campus or the surrounding neighborhood for the heffalump. We are adapting to a temporary but very domesticated life an a partially furnished apartment.

No real updates as things are really crawling up in Canada.
It sounds like power has improved with new injectors. It's smoking about the same as I bought it and Hans doesn't think that's normal and there is more power to be found somewhere. His next steps are to look into the fuel pump, probably a good idea as the truck never had a rev limiter during my ownership and. I think that linked to the fuel pump. A rev limiter will really help with on the downhills.

The rear brakes are no longer dragging, but the parking brake doesn't engage until the rig dumps air still. Hans thinks it could be the relay valve for the rear axel.
Does anyone have an ability to pull the part number or take of pic of theirs so I can find a replacement? Sounds like something I can tackle myself when I get the truck back.

LONG POST

After what seems like forever, a few days ago I was reunited with the heffalump.
I was very happy to to see my home again and have been homesick ever since leaving it. In my head, I had planned on spending about 2 weeks decompressing, getting prepared cognitively, and emotionally. Enjoying the mountains and coastline before doing a deep dive. In a few short works, I'll "deploy" as as a civilian to the warfront in E. Ukraine to support medical teams with medivacs and at stabilization points.

Sadly, this post isn't going to end happily. A friend of mine drove me to the USA/Canada border and watched my dog. I had to pick up the truck and get right back over. There was a bit of questioning at the border as I went into secondary inspection and had an interview, and the Canadians did some background checking. I think they found it odd that I as picking up a truck that was left some months ago. But they checked their boxes and off I went.

Update on the heffalump.

-The truck can now do speeds of 90+ kmh. When I first test drove it the right rear wheel and drum got hot, but it hasn't done that since.
-But now the parking brake doesn't engage at all now. I picked up a valve per Han's advice and I'm hoping that might fix it? It might be that the shoes are spread out to far and the parking brake can't engage.
-The after driving 40-50 kilometers, there was a lake of oil under truck, the cab was tilted and the entire right side of the engine/bay looked like it was dipped in oil . 8 liters of oil was added to "top it off". After spending a day washing the truck, finding loose fittings, disconnected oil lines, I think I got it under better control. About 6-8 trips to the car wash for washing, inspecting, tightening lines, had reduced the dripping. It looks a lot now. But with that much oil, it's hard to tell if what I'm seeing now is residual oil that I didn't get to in the wash, or if there are additional leaks to be resolved.
-The truck has tilting bumper that serves like a tire carrier. It looks like it was driving with it down.... The bumper is scrapped and left headlight is damaged.
-The thermostat for the habitat is not working. This powers the webasto heater. I'm guessing that it stopped working before winter as the water lines looked like they broke over winter.... When I entered the heffalump, the faucet was open and the water pump was on, sucking on dry air... Odd as I had shut this off when I dropped it off. The water tanks were now empty. And the there I what looks like frantic movement of items and lines at the water filters (now broken).
-My home was also overrun with mice. Between repairing the oil lines, water system, and a bunch of other things the past 48 hours, I've removed about 80 gallons of mice damage.

I've relayed this to Hans and I'm meeting up with him in a couple of days to discuss it all. It seems like he is aging and his health is also being affected by his years. I'm not trying to bash him, his business, or even recuperate the thousands of dollars he has charged me (he is NOT cheap). But I def will not be leaving my truck alone with him again. Just hoping to minimize all that has happened.

I've owned several houses and I'm a bit of a minimalist. This is the first place I've called home. I do consider myself to be a humanitarian and invest much of income in others as I firmly believe the earth and each other are the best of investment. The heffalmp is my home and has became a place of not just adventure and discovery. But a centering place of healing from all the storms that are faced. It's been heartbreaking to see it so neglected.

I was so excited to see a notification for an update in the Heffalump thread. This is not the updated that I was expecting. I’m so sorry that you are having these challenges with your home. You seam to be handling well, I would be pissed! Wish there was something that I could do to help. Praying for a better report the next time that you check in.

It sucks. But the only recourse is moving forward.

This week, I'll stop by SureMarine in Seattle, WA. Super rad guys. I'll talk to them about the webasto and maybe even consider going to to a newer/larger system if it makes sense.

Also, there is a guy in N. California that does weird, random, ********. Extractors, weird trucks, etc. I was referred to him by Sacramento Spring Co and helped swap out my leaf springs 1-2 years ago.He also got my differentials functional again.
Nice guy, does limited work off the side, but he is honest.
I reached out to him and he is going to work on the truck while I'm in the Ukraine. He is no MB truck expert but he is honest and willing to help. He also works at the fraction of the cost (I've had to pay him more than he has asked in the past just to make myself feel comfortable).
