Group buy for 05+ Tacoma bumper w/ tire carrier?

You mentioned looking for design ideas for retaining use of the tailgate and not obscuring the tail light...

I'm building a swing-out right now for my van. It's not for a spare, but rather for other gear and 2 gas cans. I never liked the popular method of using a welded on pin to support the entire weight of the swing-out. My van has the same issues as a truck in that anything on top of the bumper interferes with the hatch.
My design uses a large welded clevis that bolts to the vertical surface of the bumper. The swing-out has some bronze bushings and a huge clevis pin. Pulling the pin means everything can be left in the garage when not needed.
I'll post some screenshots of it tomorrow.

Sounds GREAT! Look forward to seeing it!

Here is a link to the build of my rear bumper...I know some people don't like the tube look, but it is a option.

And for those wanting a simple bumper with swing-away for the '95-'04 taco's check out this thread..... And he added some pics of the '05+ bumper as well.

And to the OP, maybe you can see what we did as far as mounting the swing-away and the taillights..... Also, are you dead set on putting the spare on the drivers side? There are some great reasons to put in on the passenger side and to have it swing to the passenger side.

I can go into it if you are not dead set on the drivers side spare mounting location. Hope this helps everyone.

I had heard that ShrockWorks was in the process of making a bumper for the 05+ Tacoma. I received an email from them confirming this. Pictures are not available yet.

Another shameless plug for Steve at CBI Offroad. Here's what he made for me:

Allpro is supposed to be nearing the completion point on their production bumper as well.

More info:

I just got back from the shop - I only had a few minutes, but it seems like this is going to be no problem nor expensive. I snapped a couple of pics with the iPhone of a one off bumper they made for a Tundra. The fit and finish were excellent. Pics are below.

The design I want is pretty simple. I am after function more than form. It will be all square with none of the pretty angles and cool slopes of my ARB front. The reasoning is that I want as many places as possible to use a high lift and the cosmetic finishes of slopes, angles, and rounded bits are not conducive for that purpose. It also keeps initial costs down and repairs easy. It will have a a Class III built into the bumper rather than hanging off the bottom. The tire will be located behind the driver and will open to the drivers side of the truck. This way I can look over my shoulder for backing and see what is behind me rather than seeing my spare. There will be two recovery points welded on either side of where the license plate will go. The license plate will be left to me. Lastly, they are putting a hole in the bumper to mount the factory trailer kit.

Guessing the cost to be South of $700.00 at this point, less any shipping of course. The more we can get - the better the price will be as he will have the jigs etc. all setup and ready. I am not sure he would be able to modify the basics without incurring greater costs. Again, the idea is to keep it simple, robust, and inexpensive.

I am going to finish the bumper myself using black Herculiner. Again, low cost and easy repairs!

Let me know what you think!

Just wondering how your fab guy ensure it is a Class III receiver? or for that matter is it airbag compliant. Like so many custom things getting DOT approved is a nightmare so wondering why he says Class III and how he gets it certified?

Well, class III is a size, not a rateing as far as I know. As far as airbags, this is a rear bumper solidly mounted to accomodate a Class III trailer reciever. The only airbag it is going to set off is the other fellows.

Well, in an attempt to keep this on track for a fellow in Colorado making rear bumpers for 05+ Tacoma's:

please let me know if any of you still have interest in getting one of these units. This post is not concerned with someone else's offerings. I am moving forward with the idea, but the fellow and his grandson are taking off for a weeks vacation before starting. He said he can incorporate subtile modifications -i.e. which side the tire mounts, jerry can / hi lift holders etc. The tire carrier is not using a spindle as many designs do, but rather a double roller bearing setup that sits low to the bumper, is welded and gusseted in place, and is very easy to maintain.

Are there any pictures or drawings of the rear bumper yet?

I will try to scan them in the next day or two - this was done on graph paper with lots of scribbles and arrows!

You can expect the same look and quality as in post #20 of this thread.

Rear Bumper idea

Here is a pic of mine. This design works ok, but need a vertical keeper component added to not rattle off road.

Are you on TTORA, Mud, etc? You might also want to try there for this group buy. I think it might be hard to get that many from here to buy one of these.
