Earthroamer through Utah, a Daddy-Daughter Adventure

El Gringo Spectacular!
Jimmy Buffett once sang, "The very best navigators don't know where they're going 'til they get there."

So, when the opportunity to use the Expeditions West Earthroamer XV-JP came up, and my wife was going to be out of town for a few days, I was forced to ditch the office for a few days and head North from Flagstaff with my three year old daughter for a bit of father/daughter adventure!

With no real plan, just a map of Southern Utah and four days, I packed the fridge with Spongebob Squarepants yogurt, applesauce, and pasta....plus a six pack of Red Stripe beer for daddy...locked the carseat into the passenger side of the Earthroamer, (ER), and we headed North out of Flagstaff on a chilly Thursday morning.

Over the Navajo reservation we spotted lots of hogans and cows; heading to our first destination...the dinosaur tracks of Moenave. 150 to 180 million years ago, this part of Arizona was apparently forest, and the imprints of Dilophosaurus abound in the limestone. An interesting point of some of these prints is that some have stride lengths of about 16 feet; evidence of running dinosaurs.

Teah enjoyed growling and walking like a dinosaur, and was fascinated by footprints larger than she was, as well as well preserved intact and broken dinosaur eggs...of course, the coprolite gave a giggle when daddy explained it was dinosaur poop....

...and, of course...dino droppings....

From Moenave we continued into Southern Utah, and one of my favorite places, Valley of the Gods, for our first night of "camping." Notice the quotes...because the XV-JP truly spoils you. Nothing like a nice heater, 25 gallons of running fresh water, a queen sized bed and an interior toilet to make roughing it not so rough!

A nice warm, comfortable place to have some breakfast while dad was packing up.

This Space For Rent
You are doing exactly what I'm excited about doing with my daughter when she gets a bit older (and can hold her own head up...). Very cool man. I love it.

El Gringo Spectacular!
The next morning, Teah helped me push the buttons which let air out of the tent airbags and close up the top, which she really got a kick out of, and we headed out of Valley of the Gods and up the Moki Dugway, a couple miles of switchbacks gaining about 2000 feet in elevation, and giving a commanding view of our campgrounds of the night before.

Our destination, Hall's Crossing on Lake Powell, and the car ferry that would take us across the lake to the Bullfrog Marina and access to more dirt roads. Teah hasn't been on any large boats, just kayaks in the Sea of Cortez, and we rolled up just in time to board the ferry (since I had forgotten the time change...). As the ferry pulled away from the dock, she got pretty worried. About that time, as luck would have it, the rig in front of us was a Schwan's Ice Cream truck...and the driver handed out ice cream sandwiches to everyone on board the ferry. It's amazing how fear can turn to elation in a little one immediately with the addition of ice cream! I've got to get the address of Schwan's Utah and write a note, 'cuz that driver rocked!

I didn't have any real plan on the route to take, but with the ER setup, SPOT beacon, 2M Yeasu handheld and cell, I figured we'd be OK. Exiting the ferry on the North side of Lake Powell, I turned West onto the Burr Trail, and shifted into 4wd on the well-kept dirt road. If you're a geology nut, you'll be amazed at the variations of strata, from white to red to gold; in all sorts of configurations. On the map, I had seen a road heading further West towards the towns of Boulder and Escalante that had a closely spaced squiggle...which could only mean switchbacks...so a route was set! On into Capital Reef National Park we went; albeit the back way!
