Rear winch?

I have a rare opportunity as I'm sitting with an "extra" M8000 winch right now. Of course weight is a problem and I honestly only use my front mounted winch maybe a baker's dozen times in a third as many years. There have been maybe 4 times in the last 7 years I really needed a rear pull (Dr. FlyingWil can explain one of those in detail).

If you had an extra M8000 winch, would you consider it for the rear of an FZJ80?

I have always like the idea of having a rear mounted winch.
Aside from the weight I think the biggest issue is mounting it.

If there are other items you wish you had before this I'd liquidate the winch and put the money towards them.

i have one in mine. pulled myself out a few times backwards.

of course up front, i saved my butt more times... lol...

I was just thinking the same thing and had a peek under my HDJ81. There is a huge space down there where the spare tire would be if Toyota hadn't (wisely) put it on the back door. I'm thinking about mounting a planetary electric winch off to one side over the rear axle and running the cable out through a tiny fairlead to the side of the pintle hitch. With 3 feet or so of space between the fairlead and the winch I should be able to get away with a much smaller fairlead and still have the cable lay in nicely. I won't bother with the freespool lever and just power out and in for the amount it will get used. I'll connect it to my aux battery that is already in the back of the truck. I picked up a 12,000lb Runva winch on ebay that was cheap enough to just toss down there and forget about. I'll probably mount the solenoid pack in the quarter panel.

I'd say that at least 50% of the time when you really need a winch, it would be best to pull backwards and turn around rather than continue through.

The times I've been stuck I almost always would have preferred to go out backwards. I bet you could easily mount the winch underneath then run the cable out a fairlead under the rear bumper....

I'd sell it to Purple People Eater, not worry about where or how to mount it, and walk away with some extra cash to take the wife out to a nice seafood dinner.

That sounds like a great idea. There is plenty of room under there for a winch.
I would fab some deflectors to minimize tire spray getting into the cable too much.

You can cut a fairlead hole in the rear crossmember and be good to go.

Simple, but a couple problems with that approach for me:

• 3rd row seats (well, at least 1 of them) are often in and deployed for passengers limiting precious cargo room,
• I have no rear tow hitch.

can you weld?
you can get a universal winch mount plate and adapt to fit between the frame rails.

My concern with this methodology is that if you don't put it on before you need it you'll never get it on once mired. If you do put in on ahead of time, it disables the vehicle so badly that you are sure to need it when without it you wouldn't have.

I had this setup and loved it! The portable winch is a great way to go. You just need to move to Utah so we can take care of the front and rear hitch mounts in my fab. shop! I have made a hitch inside of my ARB bumper which is easy to do. See here:

It was time to 86 my Warn brush guard and trade up for the ARB.

I love my portable Warn winch system that i have on my rig. I need to fab up a front reciever hitch for my winch setup. so...I got out the metal and went to work.

I used 1/4" material since the ARB is only 1/8". I made a plate that goes over the opening for the winch and simply just put a reciever there. I wanted something that looked shape and could be removed in the future.
Here I go!

The ARB needed to moded alittle to fit the new reciever.

Drill the holes and placed the place for fitment. Then i finished welding it all up.

All ready for some paint. The pin fits nice and so does the winch.

Done deal!
