Thanks Pat. The design is being created in FormZ. It is an industrial/architectural design software.

Here is the latest. The details are coming together in the galley. At the moment, it is being designed to accommodate a Coleman Extreme cooler. But eventually, the forward storage box will contain a fridge. The rear hatch has also been redesigned. It now will have a much better ability to seal up tight.

You and I live similar lives my friend. Both 6'6"+, wives that are 6'+ and kids well on their way to being amazonian monsters themselves. Ironically, we have a boy & girl as well.

Very cool, and as I see you have an LR3, may I offer seat rail extensions for you and the wife? We fitted them to driver and passenger sides or our LR3 and it really helped for the longer journeys. The fabricator is local to me, and can easily make them: http://blog.nextstepdesigns.com/?p=13


What program are you doing the CAD work in? It's doesn't look like SketchUp, or if it is, you've got some nice skills with it.

Hmmmm. My jeep and your LR3 are taller than 6', so having the FlipPac go forward may not be ideal. It will force you to decouple to deploy it.

Having it flip to the side would give you an a dry area for getting in and out and would also provide some shade. You could even make a tent attachment and turn it into an entryway/room.

The plan was to separate the vehicle from the trailer. However, there is no reason the flip top could not be located on the side on the main cabin. The only caveat being, the tent would be larger and likely cost more to fabricate.

Nice. I'm working on a similar concept. I have the trailer chassis and the teardrop unit and the RTT. This summer I plan to put the Maggiolina on the teardrop and the teardrop on the offroad trailer chassis. The ultimate plan is to access the RTT through a hatch from the teardrop.

I like the flip open idea - will be curious to see how it turns out.

I'm in the process of mounting my RTT on top of a teardrop I bought last month. I also got the idea from the EXPO & A/T's set up. I like the fliptop idea, & like others I need the xtra room when my daughters go with me. We are doing a trip to Alaska next May

Ideally, it needs to stay under 8' tall deployed so that it can be opened in a regular garage to air out after getting caught in a rain storm.
That's my single biggest complaint with my Conqueror; it opens to 10' tall.

I'm 6'5", btw.

Wow, can not wait to see the build.
One suggestion, the location of the spare tire, you may want to remount it towards the center.
To help balance the load, especially when going off-roading.
Maybe mount on the tongue location.

My hesitation lies in that I am not sure where I could obtain the tent. Does anyone have any suggestions on some fabric vendors or materials suppliers?

Concept so far:

Awesome design, I didnt read every post but if you are still in a quandary about the tent portion. once you get the support frame together and operational the way you want it, take it to a boat canvas fabricator, the would have no problems setting that up.
