Offroad Teardrop+ concept

Funny, I just had a conversation about these with the wife. Like the idea, not the weight, overall size or lack of off-road ability. Personally, / I think they are a great concept. If you are looking for a nice sized travel trailer, these would be ideal. Although, new...the prices are rather steep.

I wasn't suggesting to buy one of those hybrids. What I was getting at is to add the fold-out bunks onto the sides of your teardrop idea.

Interesting. Could be problematic with the need for an entry door. The side "pods" would be almost the entire length. Structurally it could certainly be done. Hmmmm...makes me ponder a bit.

How are you planning to climb up into the tent? I like this concept from the double decker Japanese camping car.

Yeah, the whole thing would end up straying from the whole "teardrop" concept a little bit. But I think it could still be made to work. I'm basically thinking about a top like what you did, on a 5x7 box, with fold out bunks on either side. Probably rear entry. Not sure what to do with the kitchen yet, but I don't think it would be impossible.

Your post just got my creative juices going. I like the idea of having the kid's area seperate, but attached to the adult area. And the Flippac style top makes so much sense. Having fold out bunks means nobody has to walk on somebody else's bed.

The kitchen could be mounted on a slide, and pull out either the front, or the back. Maybe go out the front, over the tongue. Inside, the space used up by the kitchen when stowed, you've have a box built around that. You wouldn't see the kitchen when stowed, it would just be a box from inside. You could have a cushion on top of that box so it could be used as a seat.

Hard to put into works but I'm too lazy to sketch.

My ideas are coming from some of the larger Conqueror trailers, but combining with your Flippac style bed idea.

It might even work with the tip out ( I think they call them bunk ends?) on only the one side, opposite the door.

Anybody know if you can buy the Thermarest unit that you see on some Dutchmen RVs as a standalone product? It looks like it would just flange mount to the plywood.

That would be an awesome idea to build a camper around one of those fold up beds. I could definitely make that work.

Uh oh...running into a problem. Any suggestions on where I could have the tent portion made? I contacted a recommended source suggested from the Equipment area. Acme Tents in Colorado - no dice. Since I am Atlanta, they think it is too far away. Then I called SpringBar - No dice. They don't do custom anymore.

Damn. Any suggestions?

Chad,

Look up, or call your local boat/yacht yard and ask them who does boat tops in your local area. These guys have, and can manufacture/bend all the hoops, as well as sew any tent that you could possibly dream up.

We have Bently boat tops here in oregon, that has done work on our M/Y and they truly are wonderful craftsman. Our daughter had them make a "Family hunting tent" Its pretty cool....Did a fantastic job.

Im sure this would work, also give you access to some pretty cool fabrics, Sunbrella is one that I did on our M/Y and would make a great tent fabric.

JJ,
Glad to hear you're in Atlanta, I'd love to see this project come together!
Try looking around Lake Lanier, I'm sure there are companies up there that do custom canopies and boat tops.
Also I'd like to invite you to check the local Land Rover club at SOLAROS.com, we meet in Roswell on the third Wednesday each month.
If you'd like more info let me know.
Mike
