Nathan - This might make you smile.

My daughter came down to my office and saw the concept. Upon seeing the upper loft, she says - "Ew...I have to sleep with my brother?!"

Piece of mind is everything... So I offer Concept 3.

Details:

- Upper sleeping lofts are 29"w x72" long
- The flip tops will require the center beam for support and rain gutters to allow for water tight closure
- Tent is revised to account for the wider space
- Nothing changes otherwise versus the previous designs

ok...you're officially out of control..

"And now..I'd like to present Concept 12"

Welcome to my world....lol

I like the new one as well, plus it offers a bit of protection getting in and out. Maybe a full skirt on each side and have one an entrance dressing room and other a toilet shower room, that is of course if you can raise it up a bit for you tall guys to stand under:ylsmoke:

Carry on, Pat

LOL... :coffeedrink:

I thought seriously about keeping the trailer coupled to the rig. Makes sense. I might simplify the design and do the single flip top but make it got out to the side.

Concept 3 is cool, but could pose problems due to the complexity of the closure. Sealing it from rain could end up being problematic.

Ladies and gents...I believe I have found a winner. :wings:

The side opening flip top wins. Simpler design, easier to create a weatherproof seal. Next up...create a parts list and a budget. I am anticipating the build time to be a good number of weeks. My goal is to get it completed and ready for camping by the middle of October.

Here it is in its open configuration and closed for transport.

Stay tuned. This is going to be fun. :victory:

The only problem I can see is if one of the kids gets up in the middle of the night and Jumps down, Landing in a very sensitive "area" of said trailer builder.:Wow1:

Ha Ha, your comment is definately suggestive that it's coming from someone under 6'6". I can safely assume it never crossed JBriggs mind to sleep below.

Only thing I would change is the hinge side of the door/s. If the door or doors were to unlatch at highway speed the results of the door catching air and diriecting it into the cabin would most likely cause it to blow out the windows or even blow the top right off as well as ripping the door off its hinges. Hinged from the front and all that is likely to happen is a flopping door.

I like seeing these buildups in the mockup software.
This trailer is going to be nice after it is done.

That is a very valid point. I will address it. Thanks for seeing that.

I've got another suggestion. Something that has been percolating in my head for a while. I love "hybrid" travel trailers. The ones where you have a box, and the bed folds up for travel. It just makes so much sense.

So, add one or two of those to the sides of the trailer, and go with the flip forward main bed. The main compartment could be reserved as a commons room, maybe a table in the middle. Nobody has to step on anybody's mattress in the middle of the night.

When you get to camp, pop open the top, then pop out the side bed(s).

What I'm talking about are things like these:

And, don't worry about using an available frame size. The frame is the least of your worries. A custom frame can be built in a weekend, and buying a ready-made frame won't be strong enough for what you want anyway. Build it the shape and size you want, and do the frame from scratch.

Funny, I just had a conversation about these with the wife. Like the idea, not the weight, overall size or lack of off-road ability. Personally, / I think they are a great concept. If you are looking for a nice sized travel trailer, these would be ideal. Although, new...the prices are rather steep.
