Ice, Ice, Baby 2025

This seemed like a good day to start the 2025 edition of BLITZEN's winter travels. The truck wasn't involved but we were practicing "wild skating" for our next outing in a few weeks.

I've been wanting to try ice blades for years but the steep price scared me off. Having stumbled upon a great sale, I grabbed a pair. At the first opportunity we headed for a local river front park that annually floods the bike paths to create an iceway.

Mrs Blitzen was suspicious of my new-fangled blades and preferred to stick with her Canadian Baby Shoes aka hockey skates. For those not familiar, nordic ice blades were designed by Scandinavians for their miles of frozen lakes and canals and excel over wavy and rough natural ice. To use, you simply snap them into your cross-country ski boots and bindings.

I found them very familiar and easy to get used to. The appropriate technique is to mimic nordic skate skiing, you can even use poles. For someone not familiar with skate skiing, it would take getting used to having free heels and longer blades.

This trial run was a success, the Mrs even cast an envious eye by the end of the day, so I might be shopping for another set! Next month we visit what Guinness World Records calls the world's longest ice skating trail. Will report back then.

Woke up this morning to find ourselves in an Arctic high!

801141D1-D241-4732-B4D1-D758D8B2D982.jpeg Temps dropped overnight to -29C/-21F and the house batteries went into low temp shutdown. Thankfully we have shore power but I need to keep the batteries happy at these temps.

The batteries are inside the step up to our sleeping loft. When we crack open the windows up there overnight, for fresh air and reduced condensation, it results in a waterfall of cold air cascading down over the battery compartment.

Had a similar experience last winter and OEV cut some vents into the access door for better air circulation. Apparently that’s not going to work so thinking caps are back on.

Maybe I’ll have to look at self-heating batteries 😒. Unless anyone knows of a 12v battery blanket with thermostat?

If you are in to DIY for less money, then I hope this can help.

I bought one of these:

Inkbird Dual Stage DV 12V Digital Temperature Controller Fahrenheit Thermostat Heating and Cooling for Homebrewing Brew Fermenter Fridge Incubator Greenhouse

to control the temp of a five battery LiFePo bank that didn't come with internal heating.

The batteries are sitting on a piece of sheet metal with these glued to the underside so that they are not directly fixed to the plastic of the batteries themselves. The whole thing is wrapped in Reflectix.

24V 50W Flexible Polyimide Heater Plate Adhesive PI Film Heating Panel 95mmx135mm (Pack of 5)

This has all been installed since 2023 and has been working well and makes a big difference in being able to maintain your batteries in winter. Good luck!

Thanks, I think that is a really good option.

I use a similar a similar appliance made by Johnson Controls I think it is to manage temps of unfleshed fur skins in a chest freezer so I can store them for a while before finishing. You can set the +/- threshold and literally dial in the "perfect" temp and hold it there. Very useful

Interesting, can you share a link?

I'm looking at 12v RV tank heater pads on Amazon. They have a thermostat that operates between 3° and 10°C and draw 2.5A each. Could I wire them directly to the batteries and achieve a self-heating arrangement?

I decided to go with the Inkbird temp control box instead so that I could dial in the on/off settings. I can't remember exactly why I didn't choose the self-regulating tank heater pads. Perhaps they were too big or I wanted an easy way to turn them off with a simple switch by the control panel. Either way I wanted mine to turn off at 42F (6C). Maybe someone with more expertise will chime in.
