Not to get OT, but I get you. I've got a friend from my school days that I did a lot of crazy things with. Of course now he likes to pull me over when I go see my parents. Scares the crap outta me whenever he gets a new vehicle.
You were fun as kid, weren't you?.. Jus' kidding. Yes, I did not have the plate relocated in any of those pictures, but I do carry a short set of bolts with washers and wingnuts on them just for such occasions. And it may not seem so, but only in the beach photo was the plate not readily...
I didn't want the OEM 'half-a-rack' that Toyota saddled the FJC with, so I got mine without and picked up a hitch carrier instead, a ROLA 59502. At 56Wx23D and approx 62lbs empty it definitely leans more towards utility than convenience, lol. Had to modify my spare tire location to clear the...
They sure do. Probably the same offshore source. I just wanted my first-aid bags to all be red and have the standard patch on them so they were completely unlike anything else in the truck. I don't want to tell someone to grab the 'such-and-such bag' when I can just say get the first-aid bag...
With that much open area between bars I'd use a small piece of metal plate for backing support and just bolt it and the can mount together across the bars.
Might use carriage bolts for a lower-profile to keep your basket surface still mostly flat. Easy-peasy.
I'm a fan of the M3-Style bag that Voodoo Tactical makes (11"Wx12"Hx4"D). Enough colors to suit anyone's preference and not a bad price, either.

I would imagine one of their L-Bracket mounts could be easily mounted to a hitch carrier basket to position the cans between the vehicle and the hitch carrier.
I do not think you would want to mount the cans themselves underneath the carrier or outside the side rails on the sides or rear of a...
My friends and I usually listen to a game or some music with the truck doors open. Not saying some decent-sounding music system wouldn't be nice, but unless the wind is blowing we don't need much volume to hear it next to a crackling fire and nobody really wants to pack something we already have...
Don't know what your budget is, but for your setup I would seriously consider ponying up the $$ for an Aluminess rear storage bumper. Their front bumper for the 2nd-Gen Tacoma is pretty nice-looking too. Not sure if it has a 2" receiver on it, or if that's mounted underneath. The link has front...
How far does it open?
EDIT: Nevermind...
A ScanGauge mount maybe? That or loose change is all that I can see fitting in that pop-out. Otherwise pull the darn thing altogether and fab up a trim piece for whatever you put there. A blank plate would almost be as useful...
Well, you will always be better off carrying the heaviest loads at least as far forward as the rear axle itself. Big loads at the very back of the bed or on a hitch carrier are going to change the truck's balance obviously, but it's a compromise we sometimes have to make (as long as it isn't...
I forgot to address the obvious issue of departure angle... My carrier has a bend in the main support arm that raises the basket an extra 2in over the hitch height. This gives just enough extra clearance on the street that I have never dragged it leaving parking lots and driveways. I've only...
Here it is. The 3-bolt clamp that ARB uses to connect their side protection bars to the brush guard on the bumpers. IMHO this is exactly the way to have your top crossbars removable without having anything loose and rattling. Plus you could swap out straight bars with your 'bike bars' in a few...
I've re-thought this a little and the idea of hinged crossbars or bars with quick-release pins is filling my head with an insane amount of potential for rattling, and I've always believed that if something can rattle it will evetually come loose. The solution is a simple one, but I can't do the...
Not a Tacoma owner, but I do run a hitch carrier on FJC pretty much full time with trailer brake lights fitted, 600lbs rated, approx 62lbs empty. I have carried hogs and deer and everything else that would normally go in a truck bed. I would never get close to my Class III hitch rating of...
Maybe something along these lines - http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/9576-Show-us-your-Toyota-4runner-tacoma-or-truck?p=1202467#post1202467 but with a crossbar right behind the cab, no crossbar in the middle, and then a hinged or pinned crossbar at the rear shaped to go over the...
I've got a good friend (who's not even a 'casual' off-roader) with a Double Cab Long Bed that I'm slowly bringing over to the dirty side. So far he's picked up a Tuffy LockBox for the bed, a BedRug, and a Softopper.
All simple, functional additions to the truck bed, and he loves them all so far.
A helpful search...
Looks like Tacoma Double Cabs of the same vintage are going to carry slightly higher values than 4th-Gen 4Runners. I searched Toyota/4Runner/Tacoma/2000-2009/4x4/4-Door in your area and found 14 listings within 25mi.
10) 4Runners (starting with an '03 with 120k for $14.5k)...
