    Family vehicle Toyota vs Jeep

    So much wisdom in this.

    What is an "Arsenal"

While it doesn't live in doctrine, for good reason, I have spent time throughout my service talking about assault rifles (never really assault weapon) but mostly in a historical context-i.e. how the StG 44 really provided infantry with characteristics desirable for close in work but somewhat...

Please talk me out of my irrational desire for a Disco

When the top end of my 4.6 let go (in this case slipped sleeve), exhaust and coolant started mixing-it was apparent in the expansion tank. If yours is still clean then it lessons the likelihood that your head gasket is on its way our or something similar. Doesn't explain your higher temps though.

Please talk me out of my irrational desire for a Disco

Have you done the sniff test of the coolant....i.e. is it green and clean, or is it streaked and smelling of oil?

Please talk me out of my irrational desire for a Disco

Check your fan clutch and see if it is worn out (when does it run hot; i.e. what speed?)

Best GMRS unit for under $150

This is where I think the midland excels; out of the box it was easy to set up and works extremely well. The little mag antenna that comes with it is decent; you can achieve the same results with any number of Chinese radios for cheaper but you'll end up piecing together some elements and still...

    Gap IID Tool: First go.

I don't know why, but the 3 flash mod is still my favorite thing I've done with the IID tool.

    entry level HT Transceiver

I would say you are; inherent with your purchase is to also recognize that if you are using VHF or UHF freqs to communicate, in an urban environment, you are going to want to 'fight to communicate.' Or in the parlance that I'm used to; if I had teams out in an urban environment that couldn't...

Best GMRS unit for under $150

The alternative would be to buy a UHF radio that can operate in the GMRS frequency range and use it there, hypothetically. That said, I think your question is answered by your post-the Midland MXT series is the best of breed for under $150; it is also really the only in the breed but I spent...

NAS LR3 build with an overseas twist

I can't blame you really, especially with Frontrunner offering domestic options there-when I brought the prospeed into the UAE I just closed my eyes and took the shipping-it was considerable (and if I had patience I could have, should have, waited to get it in the US where shipping is less and...

NAS LR3 build with an overseas twist

A few wrap up shots fm a good weekend in the hills. The kiddo got better w/perspective as I came out of radio relay/repeater site survey. This is harder to explain. Think top gear style 'gifts' (meaning huge, unwieldy, and such) that 'had' to come home... GMRS is a solid comm upgrade...

NAS LR3 build with an overseas twist

Link to what I got here off Amazon Appears to be currently unavail there but I'm sure if you look online you can find it based off that part #. r- Ray

NAS LR3 build with an overseas twist

GMRS install is mostly done but some little tweaks wait on Amazon to facilitate. Testing of the system is ongoing with very favorable impressions. In the meantime: Oil change and tire rotation. Guess I'd gotten into some mud since the last iteration, skid plates were caked too. Tired of the...

BFG - White In / White out

Can we have a conversation about Yeti here, I think that would def spice things up. (sorry, couldn't help but laugh at Stu's insertion of one of the epic threads from elsewhere)

Rugged Radio Rig set up or similar

The Midland will also require a lic from the FCC as a GMRS radio. I'd suggest a quick look at this: http://forum.expeditionportal.com/threads/184989-An-article-I-wrote-about-the-radio-communication-options-in-the-USA From there you'll start to appreciate the nuance of potentially running a...

BFG - White In / White out

I'd argue the Camel Trophy will always be the benchmark. Jeeps did that. Once. That's why I said I think we have to be clear about what we mean by offroading-plenty of trucks can do the Rubicon but would suck to daily drive, go to get groceries in, much less travel a continent. Its only a...

BFG - White In / White out

Well for the record, I love stickers-and still go black in. (& I thought we were just having fun with each other, I don't take much of this serious-I argue on Dweb, not here). As far as 'real offroad' vehicles go-that's an appllication discussion. Is it a real offroader if you do long haul...

BFG - White In / White out

That's true too. To reinforce Stu's point and reiterate mine; this picture is of my wife looking for a truck that looks right with white out (not true, just an absurd comment to accompany why white should be in) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

An article I wrote about the radio communication options in the USA

You highlight what I find confounds many casual users; CB as an HF radio really requires a good antenna configuration (not just SWR). For many that is difficult to achieve depending on terrain being wheeled in, and level of expertise they have in comms. I'm biased by a background growing up...
