Advice on finding the right adventure vehicle sub $5000

A post 1997 Jeep Cherokee4 door . 4.0 Straight 6...... ( not the Grand Cherokee ) Finding a low mile rust free unit is a no brainer. Under $5000 . Won't blow head gaskets like the 2nd gen Yota. Upgrades and spares available everywhere. 5000 lb towing capacity. Legendary engine ( a derivative...

Larger Tires vs Lower Gearing for an Expedition Vehicle (2.7 Tacoma)

The difference in tire size your talking about will net a negligible difference in drivability or pulling power. You will barely feel the difference. I wouldn't consider a re-gear for the uses you describe. Nor would I recommend larger than a 32" tire. You just won't need them. ( There is...

Can't find what I want so the build begins.

While the wife proceeds with the finish work. ( she is in full on decorator mode.) I thought I'd move on to the final fit out of the exterior. I have a bit to do before I can add insulation and skin. I have to fit a rear door for the generator / storage bay. Wire for exterior LED, clearance...

Lite weight campers & RVs. Consumers/customers need to push manufacturers....

Yea. Editing before morning coffee is a slow process. And this damn cat won't stay off my computer..... Nice to see that someone else has the same time clock as I do.

Progress. A bit darker than I pictured but it's what the wife wants. She's doing a great job. And best of all I'm not having to do it.....

The generator vs solar is all about weight and power delivery. Because the tc ( at least mine ) requires very little power to operate I could run without it, but as a true 4 season camper I find the convenience of the generator out ways the added 60 lbs of extra weight. I use the generator...

Lite weight campers & RVs. Consumers/customers need to push manufacturers....

I guess that all depends on the interoperation of the words legitimately sized 4 season camper. If you are describing a slide out, solar powered, flat screen equipped rolling house , I'd have to agree. If one is happy with the 4 industry essentials: full galley , queen bed , usable dinette...

Am now handing over the interior to the wife. She's a wiz at sanding, staining, and trim work. This will allow me to start buttoning up the outside.

    gas vs diesel

Good luck finding fry oil in the outback.... Service costs on a diesel are much higher. Lets just say your average Ford or Chevy v-8 - 5-6 quarts of oil every 5,000 miles, 1 oil filter ,1 fuel filter if needed , no need for a water separator etc. Diesel engine , Lets use the venerable 7.3 as I...

    87 Suzuki Samurai

Be very careful when choosing the 1600 transplant engine if you intend to go that way. Most have suffered stress cracks in the aluminum block. It is difficult at best to find one that has none.

    gas vs diesel

I'll wade in on this from a practical experience point of view. I will preface this with a disclaimer : I'm a builder ...... I will always opt for gas over diesel. Even when towing large loads is added to the mix. A gas powered rig can be configured in such a way as to nearly bomb proof on...

    Camper Windows

I have some left over windows from my present build. They are crank out , not sliders and are rectangular ( not ovals ). Raw aluminum frames. If memory serves correctly they are 10x24 . I can measure them and shoot you a pic or two if you are interested.... An example would be the front (...

    2006 Megacab and a truck camper ???????

Generally speaking once a camper has been relegated to a trailer mount , and the price is reduced to " next to nothing" . Run in fear...... A 78 Alaskan is a unique camper . They tend to be heavy ( if in great shape ) and really heavy once water logged. I think you'd better keep looking.
