    Need help with offline mapping

That hasn't been true for over a decade. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/nsa-growth-fueled-by-need-to-target-terrorists/2013/07/21/24c93cf4-f0b1-11e2-bed3-b9b6fe264871_story.html But my point wasn't technological, rather philosophical. It seems people are happily...

    Bluetooth Module for Kenwood D710

My point was just to show the BT dongle I tripped across, which has the 5V regulator and RS232-TTL level interface built-in. Byon sells them for I think about $40 and it reduces cabling very significantly since it's designed to work with the quasi-standard ham APRS TNC DB-9 pin outs. IOW...

    Antenna separation question.

More is better and it's likely if you're less than even a few wavelengths the receiving radio will be overloaded and unable to hear anything while the other is transmitting. That's called desense, short for desensitizing the radio. Where exactly this goes from annoying to damaging isn't cut...

    Bluetooth Module for Kenwood D710

FWIW, this is my hack job of an APRS station.

    Bluetooth Module for Kenwood D710

How did you make APRSdroid read-only? I'm only able to get it to listen for packets by starting tracking, which seems to be what initiates the Bluetooth stack. That's fine I suppose but it seems to enable the TX logic, which I set to manual but it'll still burp out the occasional packet for...

    Need help with offline mapping

I have COTREX on my iPhone but I just haven't found it very useful due to the need to cache maps ahead of time or be online. It does seem to pull together several good map references, though, and has a pretty up-to-date and mostly correct trail database.

    Connectors and crimpers

I personally never worked on the rovers but have worked on 11 programs that made it to their orbits (one is around Mars), one that is a deep space probe and one that got a ride on a vehicle that failed on launch (now sits at the bottom of the Pacific). Every cable used crimped terminals. Gold...

    Connectors and crimpers

You still have to worry about flex with crimps, just that you don't have to worry about the terminations causing additional issues with stiffness and the stress concentration at the transition from solid to stranded. What is an acceptable amount of flexure depends on the cable type (strands...

    Mobile Ham Etiquette Questions.

There's nothing wrong sending QSL cards, if I got one from a new ham who was excited enough to send one I'd send one back. But my $0.02 is you want to confirm contacts that took some considered effort or leveraged a unique characteristic. For example I would not personally send or expect a QSL...

    New trucks and 4low...

Oh man, I'm sure you're on to something. Was just thinking today that my left knee and right shoulder are what bug me most as I approach 50. I'm sure was I to take the salesdrone up on testing a Ranger over a weekend that I'd be corrupted. I have no doubt. The tale of the tape measure is...

Is the Ranger the Hilux we've been wanting?

I dunno, they don't seem that different to me. Both just have too much "stuff" going on. Flaps. Check. Contact. Check. Ignition. Check. Start!

    New trucks and 4low...

I had one and would have loved to just replace it. It's not that it can't be found but eventually everything just plum gets tired. I was faced with a frame-up rebuild of my 1991 after 24 years and 300k tough miles or finding something less worn out. Financially cleaning the frame, patching...

    New trucks and 4low...

One doesn't even have to do that far Down Under and put up with right hand drive. Toyota sells a 4 cylinder, 5 speed Hilux in Mexico with a left hand drive. Crank windows even. Why, oh why, does Toyota like to torture?

Is the Ranger the Hilux we've been wanting?

That is just an example of the importance of routine maintenance. A stuck caliper piston overheating wheel bearings is just as common as wearing brake shoes to the rivets. And we're talking about rear brakes which wear at a fraction of the fronts. So when you do pads and rotors in front...

So to whomever is selling a small truck with a stick shift and manual transfer case - shut up and take my money now!

Is the Ranger the Hilux we've been wanting?

Yup, I'll admit that is a legitimate argument. I have had parking brakes freeze up in the winter, too. OTOH I had a rock wedge in a caliper once. That wasn't any good either. There's always a supposition of failure modes. I can honestly say the number of times I've had issues with rear...
