    defender?

They do NOT cost $100000. Just because some stupid person pays that, does not make it right. You could easily have a nice one for less than $20k landed. As "as new" one will obviously cost more, but nowhere near that kind of price.

Used is not $135000. Depending on condition, it could be from $5000 to $50000

    Next-Generation Defender

The dials are cute, but it does not make low profile tires get through mud or sand or deep snow. I've spent enough time towing LR3s and new RRs through things I idle through to understand the limits. The Rubicon is the proof. No fancy dials. Not expensive. Joe Average DOES buy it by the...

    Next-Generation Defender

Have you ever been off road with one??? They lift wheels on anything. Wheel travel numbers are deceptive. That does not mean that the truck uses that wheel travel, it just means it is there. Go articulate one and you will see what I mean. Look, as I said, I wheel with them all the time. I...

    Next-Generation Defender

Yes, back on topic.... A new stock Rubicon is on a similar footing to a new stock Defender with regard to off road capabilities. Each has their pluses and minus. Overall it is a wash. The POINT is that Land Rover needs to maintain or improve on that level of off road capability WHILE...

    Next-Generation Defender

They are "OK". Certainly better than other similar expensive SUVs, but that is not saying much..... Let me start off by saying that I wheel with brand new RRs, LR4s, LR3s.... These are not only stock, but done up as well as they can be. They are certainly not "very, very good". The magic...

Any built 300tdi D1 owners here?

The VNT on a diesel is NOT to give more power. You do that in other ways. It is solely to increase the torque at lower rpm by producing peak boost much earlier. More turbo is not normally the answer at these engines cannot take a large amount more boost without problems. I do not have a VNT...

    Next-Generation Defender

    1) It makes them a lot of money. 2) It gives the rest of the range creed. Get them out competing, winning off road event. Show it as the leading expedition vehicle in the world. Living off of 40 year old coattails is dying off to nothing very quickly.

    Next-Generation Defender

Bwahahaha... Have you ever actually been wheeling with Jeeps. Ones that are wheeled hard and built hard??? I doubt it. The frame is about the only thing that the current Defender does better and that costs nothing in the scheme of things. Defender built to a high standard....that is the...

    Next-Generation Defender

This is the attitude that makes it impossible. They need to step out of the high priced box that they put themselves into. It could be done if they really had the vision to do it. I'm a designer. I know what needs to be done. It could be done if they choose to....

On a diesel??? I'm fairly up on the diesel performance scene and I've not heard of this happening. People blow turbos from high EGTs or from surge by running too much boost at low rpm. Sometimes seals go. Vane failure, nope.

Apples and oranges. You are comparing a VNT on a petrol.... On a diesel, they are magic. They are simple to control and peak torque goes way down in the rev range, basically killing turbo lag. Every diesel engine in the last ten years, at least, has one. Because the normal power band on a...

You obviously have not driven one with a VNT. Peak torque at 1400 rpm. Pulls like a train from idle. You CAN have the best of both worlds.

    Next-Generation Defender

You are comparing to the wrong vehicle. They need to look at what Jeep has done when modernizing the TJ to the JK. It sells like hotcakes. They have (overall) managed to keep the off road ability while modernizing it to suit the average person. In addition, they offer a huge range of factory...

    Next-Generation Defender

That is quite old news. There is a new "Defender is coming" article and picture every year for the last 15 years.... They initially said (last year) it would be on the LR3 platform... Then they said that they scrapped the idea. I will not believe anything until there are official pictures...

My 90 (with 200TDI and 1.2 t. case and 34s) was just weighed the other day at 2230 kg (4915 lb) with full fuel and nobody inside.... Cruising at 75 mph (120 kph) is no problem. Sure it slows down on hills, but no more than the average loaded truck on the road. I live at 4000 feet and there...

I have not heard of these problems. Fit a VNT turbo, tune it and they are perfect for a truck. Really all turbo diesels should have a VNT. What makes you think it is designed as a car motor?? I thought it was a complete Rover design for the Rover trucks.

It does not make it much easier as LRA used some custom parts that are no longer available. Plus or minus either engine is going to be the same amount of work. Using a Rover engine is substantial less work and they can put out more than adequate power. The TD5 is a decent choice these days...

The D2 in that link has an NV3500, not a 4500. There has since been quite a few problems with the gear train. If you really start to look around, you will see that most people that have done Cummins conversions have has reliability issue outside of the engine, caused by the engine.... It can...
