Maybe an hour or less from the Trinity Site, campgrounds in the area, or anywhere in the National Forest by Alamogordo. Backcountry camping only in the monument, first come first serve, no vehicle camping, have to hike into the sites. Mite hit the Trinity Site myself when it opens this year...

Simple answer is, there not needed unless you are a serious rock crawler. Other point, they are illegal for road use in most states and therefor most tire shops will not install tires on them. They are a royal PIA to mount (personnal experiance working at an off road shop)

Equator Expedition Series, not as stylish as the Tilly but just as tough and with a lifetime warrenty. Got lucky, Gander Mountain was getting rid of them at $5.00 each a few years back.

About 2 1/2 - 3 hrs. Wouldn't mind joining you, but will save the canyons for the fall after the monsoons are over. Still lots of exploring left to do down this way.

Nice report, I always thought the north side of the range was the best kept secret in the LA area. Used to hike the that area when we lived there, and would see little to no people, even on holiday weekends.

Headed into the Lincoln National Forest for a short day trip, this was my first outing since moving to Alamogordo NM. Wanted to get a feel for the forest, so just hit a couple of close and easy forest roads. Felt good to get out if only for a few hours. Trip Report Here...
