After sizing up specialized's prices.....MOTOBECANE it is!

One last thing. They have been routinely busted for putting fabricated magazine review quotes on their web pages, and I see they're at it again. I'm not saying Bikes Direct are complete charlatans, but they fool a lot of people. Again, don't think you're getting anything other than exactly what...

After sizing up specialized's prices.....MOTOBECANE it is!

Be cautious and don't just get lured in my promises of high level components for low MSRP. Motobecane bikes can be, and often are super sketchy. I've scene more than a few fail. One was a carbon fiber frame the broke in half at the top tube revealing the inner layers of the carbon layup, which...

    Africa Water Purification

When I was at the MSR water lab in Seattle, arguably the most advanced lab of its kind in the US, they were developing a filter for the military that would go in-line on a hydration pack and would remove heavy metals and chemicals.

    Africa Water Purification

Many pesticides and herbicides can be removed with different filtration methods, but UV won't do anything to those compounds. Same for metals.

Convince me I need a fridge!

I know, by the statistics, you guys don't always read the Expedition Portal home page, but you really should. Coen and Karin of Landcruisingadventure.com have been on the road for 14 years. Here's their take on the fridge...

    The Budget Minded Bikepacker

Yes. Budget minded. You can, and many do, spend a fortune on gear. Now, had I said, "the cheapest way to go bikepacking," you might have caught me out. Keep in mind the intent of this list, which is pretty old by now. It was intended to illuminate less expensive options to get outside on your...

Is Mountain Biking the Biggest Threat to New Wilderness Designations?

Dave, here in Prescott about 15 years ago we had virtually no trails. By 2014 we had one of the most extensive trail systems in the Southwest and it's even bigger now. Today we have a massive number of riders in town including a couple pros and Olympians who moved here simply to ride. However...

Is Mountain Biking the Biggest Threat to New Wilderness Designations?

Two of my favorite things. Keeping to this thread: Several years ago I went out on a ride and found half a dozen beer cans at one of my favorite trailheads. I picked them up, stuffed them in the mesh pocket of my pack, and later posted an image to FB out of frustration. Three months later a...

Are there no side by sides discussed here?

    Exactly. That's my point!

Are there no side by sides discussed here?

So what is it? Do you hate them, or hate them with a passion? LOL I try, try, try to not hate anything, but SXS vehicles do earn my ire more than most other user groups. I have a local buddy who is a flight medic. He continually tells me about all of the gnarly crash victims he transports...

Is Mountain Biking the Biggest Threat to New Wilderness Designations?

Meh. Some phrases mean different things to different user groups. Wanna bet that bike is less impactful than your Montero? :)

    Hiking/Backpacking Cookset Recommendations

I've used and carefully evaluated many cook sets as of late for an upcoming review to be published on the ExPo home page. There are lots of good choices, but a few stand out. I do like GSI from a value standpoint, but some aspects of their kits are pretty cheesy. On the flip side, I think there...

    Hello guys!

Largely depends on what you want out of this new bike. If all you desire is a little casual fitness a day or two a week, that can be achieved with a minimal spend. On the other end of the spectrum are people who want to enjoy riding on actual mountain bike trails. That doesn't mean you have to...

    KLR 650 Questions

When I was in Ecuador, I was on a very well used, but nicely maintained KLR with 40,000 miles of rental service on the clock. At least half a dozen times we rode over passes topping 13,000 feet and one 14,000 foot pass. I'll admit, the old KLR putzed along getting there, but it did it. It didn't...

Is Mountain Biking the Biggest Threat to New Wilderness Designations?

I very respectfully disagree. I've read it several times, and while I concede there might be isolated examples to vaguely support some of his points, overall, I think it's grossly inaccurate. To go one further, I think it even manipulates the truth for a self-served messaging. Much of what he...

Is Mountain Biking the Biggest Threat to New Wilderness Designations?

Sorry, didn't feel like diving headlong into this rabbit hole. Simply put, the access outcome of newly designated wilderness areas has to be assessed on a one-by-one basis. In many cases the new destinations don't alter access at all. In a few cases, it can even improve some facets of access...

Making the transition from rtt to ground tent

You peeps should read the home page more. :) Anywho..... After two years of dedicated testing two-person systems. Almost 18 of them to be exact. This is by far the best. I mean insane best. Nothing comes close. As good as you'll get to our $4,000 home bed...

    Lantern/ Cooler Questions...

I'd vote for a Luminoodle over a lantern. Cheap. Easy. And really good. Coolers, get something cheap and easy to see how it goes. Coleman is tough to beat for value.

    Do you crumple or fold?

The common wisdom with most manufacturers is to sort of fold and stuff. The idea being to fold, but not in any repeated pattern. It's probably more important how you store your tent. Mine are usually stored in cotton pillow cases in a closet.

    My new toy!

I had one of those for almost a year when I lived in France. That was in 1995. I loved that bike. Rode it from Paris to the tip of Italy and back. Mine was horrifically ugly with splashy mid-90s pastel graphics. I sold it for a Ducati 916 and regretted that instantly.
