    The paradox of choice

I've deduced that any bike will work for nearly any condition. How well is the question. I've ridden the Porcupine Rim on a 29er hardtail single speed. Worked okay, but it was waaaay more fun on a Rocky Mountain Instinct BC (130/140 29er with 2.4 tires). So, it's really about buying a bike...

Mukluk with 27+ wheels. A pretty formidable touring platform.

    ARB 50qt or Dometic 50qt?

I spent several weeks testing the ARB and Dometic units for an upcoming Overland Journal review. It is at the printer as we speak if you want to hold out for the full results of a six fridge review. I will give a slight sneak peek as some information is already available above. Those two units...

27.5 "Plus" hard tail trail bike

As someone who worked in bike shops for over a decade, I will add this. Where I see most buyers go astray is with the almost paranoid pursuit of "getting the most for their money." Every buyer seems nearly spooked they'll pull the trigger on something that isn't a good "value." The reality is...

Beyond the Truck: Grand Canyon Solitaire

Here's a little piece I wrote up as part of our new Beyond the Truck series. As you know, not all of the coolest places in the world have wheeled access. https://expeditionportal.com/beyond-the-truck-grand-canyon-solitaire/

    26r, 29r or other?

Dunno. Weight matters very little in the bigger picture. My guess is it's in the neighborhood of 25 pounds. I weigh 175 pounds, so 2-5 pounds here and there in bike weight has minimal impact on watt to weight ratios. How that weight is distributed and what it is committed to matters.

    Yakima rooftop tent

Not by any stretch. The crossover between what we might call traditional overlanders, and the core REI audience (hippy granolas like me) is significant. The employees and managers within companies like Yakima, MSR, Thermarest, Sea to Summit, Thule, La Sportiva, Patagonia, and dozens of leading...

    26r, 29r or other?

I'm still a fan of the 29 wheel for most applications. Even in technical terrain at variable speeds I like the added roll-over of the bigger diameter. The Rocky Mountain Instinct BC Edition I rode all last year with slightly wider 2.4 tires on 140mm suspension was really fun and capable over a...

    Fear of the highlift?

I saw a Hi-Lift just this week mounted to a roof rack on a brand new Grand Cherokee. Given there isn't a single point on that vehicle where the jack could be used, it's an easy assumption to think the owner doesn't know how to use it.

    Fear of the highlift?

I grew up spending summers on my uncle's farm using a Hi-Lift to yank out a million fence posts. Had several over the years on all manner of 4x4 vehicles and never used it - not once. Daily on the farm. Never on the trail. And yes, if not used properly, you bet they're dangerous. I think...

    anyone ride the stealth bikes?

Mike, I think this isn't so much of a debate about the overall merits of e-bikes. To be sure, I've never ridden one and not smiled ear to ear. I think many of us are concerned about the implications of their use on non-motorized multi-use trails.

    Non-touristy quick dry clothing

I wear lots of stuff from NAU as my travel duds. I might also add that Exofficio finally wised up and stopped making clothes only for zoo keepers and monkey trainers. Their new designers are creating collections that are far more contemporary, fashion-forward, and look appropriately casual and...

    Fat bikes

For the most part, my winter rides are pretty slow, not very aggressive. But...I'm outside on a bike. The vid below demonstrates the potential of a fatty, but keep in mind, we're talking about Gully and Wade from Rocky Mountain doing some serious shredding. Not exactly your average dudes...

    de lorme in reach

GEOS has a pretty good reputation for solid response and dispatch procedures, and the GEOS representatives I interviewed did say they much prefer an inReach scenario over a one-way comms SPOT signal as they can almost always dialogue with the people on the scene who pushed the button. I have...

    de lorme in reach

I have an inReach. I've sent/received thousands of messages and track points over the last 2+ years. I've used it in Iceland, Peru, Ecuador, Nepal, Alaska, Baja, and all points between. Has yet to fail me. I trust it explicitly. I also think it's too useful to just deploy for emergencies. I find...

    26r, 29r or other?

26 inch wheeled bikes are all but dead. I can't see myself riding one ever again, outside of 26-inch fatbikes.

    anyone ride the stealth bikes?

Well said. I did recently see a dude on one of my local trails on an e-bike and he was genuinely riding like a **************. It was the first time I saw one on the trail behaving as many people feared they would. Lots of cooked turns, heavy break ruts, not great.

Stay tuned, something new from Salsa coming today!

Jay, as a longtime roadie I used to be hyper-geeked on my bike setup. I measured my bikes to the nanometer. While racing at the National Championships several years ago, my time trial bike got the cranks damaged in transit. I went to a local shop, plopped down $500 for new cranks on my $10,000...

    anyone ride the stealth bikes?

I think I'm slowly moving ever closer to the anti-ebike side.
