Stay tuned, something new from Salsa coming today!

I get it. But, in reality is a distance equal to the size of a squirrel's pecker going to ruin my ride? No. For what it's worth, I've obviously not ridden a Deadwood SUS, but I've learned over the years that the battle of millimeters is often waged right between your ears more than on the trail. :)

Thanks Co-opski. The Awol is a nice bike. I just took it out for a spin today. I have a more comprehensive review of that bike coming up since it is unchanged for the coming year. I also have a review of the Advocate Ti Hayduke I need to wrap up. That one is long overdue.

Say what??? That's a big hoop to cram into 449mm. I think that's pretty impressive. Running 29+ is not unlike any other wheel package and will have some compromises, but I'd say that's about as short as those stays could get.

DB has had a turbulent journey over the years. When I think back to the golden days, it was really a killer brand. I had a Sandvik-made titanium DBR hardtail frame in 1993 that was the jam. The Diamondback Apex with the "smoke" paint job in the late 80s was stellar. The brand now is a shell of...

That's the reason to buy a Bucksaw. The FS just doesn't justify itself in the snow, but it also doesn't have any detriment aside from an extra few pounds. If speed isn't high on your priorities, the Bucksaw makes almost everyone a better rider in most terrain. Not to say you can't completely...

It's fine. The squish only has much benefit when riding over hard snow that has been chopped up with footprints and ruts. Otherwise, I don't feel there's any advantage to having it. Even then, that benefit is pretty modest and not a reason to buy a Bucksaw. The Bucksaw is getting pretty niche...

Rebecca Rusch invited me as a guest to ride in her event, Rebecca's Own Private Idaho. Pretty fantastic. Beautiful course, but it was a ball buster. I didn't do the full hundo as I was riding with a pack full of cameras and stopping to take photos, which was actually quite nice. It allowed me...

Don't have a clue. My guess is not, but I do know DB has had other bikes on offer through Costco as well as REI, Performance, etc. Their distribution has certainly been a little...loose. :) They are making some better product than they have in years. I have been riding their all carbon Haanjo...

I will have a review up next week of the Diamondback El Oso Grande. All things considered, for the value, not a bad rig. Needs to go on a serious diet, but for the money, I think it's a good option.

To spot or not to spot

Because the bulk of my trips are solo, you hit on an important tidbit. Some guys in this discussion are focussing things through a lot of bravado. I don't carry a two-way device because I'm some nervous Nelly. I carry it out of consideration for my lovely wife. When I'm on another continent by...

I've used the Bontrager pump, and it definitely works. I prefer using the Airshot, although it's hardly inexpensive either. Here's a little diddy I wrote for Singletracks.com https://www.singletracks.com/blog/mtb-gear/tubeless-tire-mounting-made-easy-airshot-rechargeable-air-canister-review/ I...

    Fat bikes

I've spent significant time on fat and mid-fat tires/wheels over the last few years. If done properly, the weight difference between a 3.8 wheel combo and a 27.6+ setup isn't really all that significant or noticeable. The main difference is how they handle and ride. With full fat (4.6) or even...

Ah, the two-wheel-drive fatbike. The definitive answer to the question no one asked. LOL.

Did my first ride on my Mukluk fitted with 45mm 27.5 WTB Scraper rims and 3.0 Ranger tires. Pretty darn fun. I almost went with 29+, but I'm glad I didn't.

3.8 is pretty fat for most applications where full 4.8-ish fat isn't necessary.

    BEWARE OF RTIC COOLERS

Americans value integrity. Particularly if they're at the losing end of a lack of it. American commercial enterprise? That's different story. The pursuit of money making in America will lead you to break a kitty cat's neck if it wins you the money you want. Signed, your's truly, a former Wells...

Thanks for the correction on the frequency. Typing on my phone I must have fat-fingered that. I still contend, the dispatch center doesn't know poop about your emergency. I spent 12 hours interviewing Air Force and Coast Guard response personnel and they're the ones who said they're shooting...

To spot or not to spot

When I was on my 300 mile solo bikepacking trip in Iceland I was just plodding along and arrived at a HUGE river I had to cross. I started taking off my gear making ready for the crossing. My inReach pinged and it was a message from my wife 6,000 miles away, "Please be careful." I crossed the...

    BEWARE OF RTIC COOLERS

So, I've been following the RTIC saga since the beginning. Americans have always been staunch defenders of intellectual property, ethical business, and succeeding based on one's own merits. From the beginning, the RTIC business model was one of rather brazen theft of intellectual property, if...

To spot or not to spot

A couple things to point out. The subscription fees for both SPOT and Delorme are largely dictated by their satellite usage agreements, not their own business model. For SPOT, they use their own Globalstar network of satellites, which have been, well, less than optimal in years past. Delorme...
