Nice bike!
For anyone who has never been, I'd highly recommend Salsa Ride Camp in Seeley, WI. Especially the overnighter. Great weekend of riding.

I like the bike, and the 29+ platform, but the geo, on closer inspection, looks a little whacked out. Very long chainstays. Would be great for bikepacking, but likely not the most nimble trail machine. In Salsa's defense, they'll probably say that's not what they were going for anyway, so I should just shut up now.

Say what??? That's a big hoop to cram into 449mm. I think that's pretty impressive. Running 29+ is not unlike any other wheel package and will have some compromises, but I'd say that's about as short as those stays could get.

This would be a good one four you Flounder to write up along with your new Mukluk.
Expo has been my go to for bikepacking reviews. Some of the best you have done are the RM Sherpa, Salsa Deadwood, Bucksaw (Iceland), Ti Fargo (do it all), Beargrease/ Lauf and Specialized (don't sue me) AWOL.
Others that I'm interested in are Advocate bikes line up, Surly's new Troll or worldTroller and Big Fat Dummy, Trek 920 disc.
BTW JJ and Flounder make a northern Alaska trip some time now. Thinking gravel grind the Denali Park road, or hut to hut in the Kenai Mts . I did like Flounders review on the marine Hwy and JJ's Homer beach ride.

Thanks Co-opski. The Awol is a nice bike. I just took it out for a spin today. I have a more comprehensive review of that bike coming up since it is unchanged for the coming year. I also have a review of the Advocate Ti Hayduke I need to wrap up. That one is long overdue.

I get it. But, in reality is a distance equal to the size of a squirrel's pecker going to ruin my ride? No. For what it's worth, I've obviously not ridden a Deadwood SUS, but I've learned over the years that the battle of millimeters is often waged right between your ears more than on the trail.

Well, the Lenz Behemoth (29+ full sus) has 435mm CS's, so there is room in there IF they wanted the geo to be a bit more flickable. Not saying at all that the DW FS geometry is bad by any means; I think it's just how they chose to structure it to lean more toward "adventure by bike" and less toward "adventure by trail shredding". I'd love to hear your ride impressions whenever you can get your hands on one. Spec sheet numbers are one thing, actual saddle time is quite another, and I respect your opinions highly.

Jay, as a longtime roadie I used to be hyper-geeked on my bike setup. I measured my bikes to the nanometer. While racing at the National Championships several years ago, my time trial bike got the cranks damaged in transit. I went to a local shop, plopped down $500 for new cranks on my $10,000 speed machine and the day was saved. I placed okay, but broke a personal 40K record. I continued to kick *** on that bike for two years before I realized one crank was 172.5mm and the other 175mm. I had no clue.
So much for me being super sensitive to tiny differences in bike metrics. LOL.
Now that I have this gig whereby I ride a dozen different bikes in a year, I just hop on, get the seat relatively where it should be, spend a few weeks settling in, and wouldn't you know it, 90% of the time the bike works out great. So, while I do tend to still scrutinize the millimeters and angles, it's not until I spend a month on a bike I can really put it all together with an overall evaluation.
