You will have less rolling resistance with an A/T and therefore better mileage and less tire noise. Other than that, in my 1000's of miles of off highway towing, I have not seen any advantage of the M/T other than compatibility with the tow rig configuration.

You have a short. You need to fully evaluate the wiring on the trailer and on the vehicle to find the source. What trailer plug configuration are you using the make the connection? We often see incorrectly wired plugs & sockets as the root cause.

to remove those bolts you need a very long extension (or a series of them put together and access them from the rear over the top of the transmission. I would suggest keeping them in the torx pattern otherwise you may have difficulty getting to the proper torque when you re-install
