New 3.5L from Salvage Yard - Where to Start?

Yeah, well, cry thrice is twice too much. Remember that I got ripped off by trying to buy engines (plural) twice before. I’ve lost thousands in scams in trying to buy a quality engine. That road is now closed and the funds evaporated

New 3.5L from Salvage Yard - Where to Start?

Argh, I have the worst luck. The new junkyard engine has ZERO compression on cylinder 2 and low compression on cylinder 3. Now I have to do a leak down test or just tear the heads off. Sigh, either way, it's looking to starting eating more money and fast.

    Digital Torque Wrench Recommendations

Just a follow up, I am really enjoying my CDI Precision Instruments beam type torque wrench. It's extremely easy to use accurately and get consistent results. However, the 1/2" drive version is quite large at about 26" long and not all that well suited for torquing head bolts (its big), so if...

New 3.5L from Salvage Yard - Where to Start?

Yeah, there are a few mitigating factors at play. 1. This is a two year lifespan vehicle. That's all it has to last 2. I've already exceeded my budget, and I have yet to baseline the rest of the vehicle (brakes, tires, bearings, shocks, etc...) 3. The City has determined that the Monty is...

New 3.5L from Salvage Yard - Where to Start?

Okay - Advice Needed I bought a "new" 3.5L engine from a 2002 Montero that had been rolled. There was a ton of mud underneath it, so it looks like someone had a good time up until they didn't. I am hoping that means this motor is running well. Not being very bright, or very experienced, I...

    Value/price check - 96 Montero Sr

Fun fact, 33” tires fit without a lift, and they have rock solid drivetrains and a huge support base of helpful Montero fans online. They are durable and fun, and ridiculously cheap for what you get.

Yeap, any standard heavy duty computer power cable should work fine. Thicker gauge the better.

Looking for advice...buying a new to me Jeep

The 4.0 inline 6 is the engine to get. The 318 is nice because its a V8, but when it comes to durability and ease of maintenance, the 4.0 inline is unbeatable. It's basically a tractor motor. Lots of torque down low, bulletproof reliability, and TONS of Youtube support on how to fix or repair...

EyeInTheSky's Gen 3 Budget Build Thread

I haven't looked at the ebay listing, but just a heads up, I once had to replace a 1998 Gen 2.5 crankshaft timing plate thingie. I borrowed one from an older montero (might have been a 3.5L DOHC version) and they were very different! The borrowed one was about 20 degrees different than the...

    The Lost ZR2 Build

Awesome truck. Have you experienced the roll over sensor / side airbag issue? With all those electrical mods, I would not be surprised if Chevy nixes any warranty claim you might make should it happen it to you. Here is an article about it. Might learn up on which fuse to pull when going off...

EyeInTheSky's Gen 3 Budget Build Thread

If I ever end up sourcing a new engine for my 2002, I’d be happy to give you the parts off my old one. The parts you need are in good shape on mine. My issues are all internal.

What vehicles was the 3.5 litre used in?

From my junk yard purusings and hands on tear down of my 98 and 2002 Monty’s, I’d say at least the 98-2001 Montero’s used the same engine. The 2002 is very similar with minor changes to the front accessory plate (timing belt area) and top end intake manifold. I’m sure the 3.5 in Montero...

Hand tools, does brand really matter?

Would be interesting to talk about what tools have been surprisingly handy, that you would never do without given the choice. For me, that's pretty easy. I love the following three tools more than I ever imagined I would. I use them constantly: - Long handle wrenches...

Hand tools, does brand really matter?

Johnathan Hanson has writen some nice articles about tools. There is a 3-part article linked here: http://www.exploringoverland.com/overland-tech-travel/2012/8/25/the-one-case-tool-kit-part-1.html Brand names are what they are, but quality fits the bits better, less chance of rounding off...

    OBA for LR4

oh man, looks like Land Rover got lazy! Any idea what that module is? Is it in a dust resistant housing? Could it be re-mounted to the outside of that spare battery box? Have you searched the Discovery3.CO.UK forum for what they do with that module when installing a second battery?

EyeInTheSky's Gen 3 Budget Build Thread

Eye, have you taken a look at your tensioner? The Adventure Driven guys are extremely vocal about only using OME tensioners (I know, they are $150!), but they cite multiple reported and personally experienced failures with anything else. Some of your symptoms sound like this could be a...
