NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Awesome. Thanks for the info, and about the cleaning solution.

Yeah, sorry. 1998 tips for a Gen 3 motor is not going to be much help

Finally Found What I was Looking For

I like the red color a lot. As for the compass, easy fix Head to a parking lot, push the reset button and drive in circles until it finds north again. Takes no more than 2 orbits usually.

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Trying to figure out which seals and gaskets you are referring too. RockAuto has a variety listed, no idea what I need: or or or the bottom two of this one:

    PacS14 Montero 2.5 not really a build thread...yet.

I hate to tell you this, but the part you took off didn't need to be removed. The plate over the opening with the larger 4 bolts is what should have come out....

    Gen 2.5 A/C compressor

Seems like a Montero Sport compressor would work just fine, and the junk yards around here are FILLED with them

13A-49. There's a little grayish flat cap near the throttle body on top of the intake. Pop the cap off, put a long skinny regular tip screwdriver in there, and a quarter turn one way or the other will bring that idle speed right up. There is a whole procedure for doing it the right way on...

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

If its ring damage, the truck will be towed to the junk yard. If Its head damage.....Jury is still out on that one. That was my plan, and part of the reason why I pulled the spark plugs....fortunately, the FSM actually has an excellent step by step procedure for this (11A-11), which shows all...

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Ryan, I don't know what position the timing plate is supposed to be in. It's not addressed in the FSM. It's barely ever mentioned, just once on page 13A-133 and in diagrams on 11A-21 and 11B-16. I assume it oriented with the top of the blade at top dead center, generally in line with the...

The generator tests are pretty easy to do. In my case, they never revealed any issues other than high voltage (15+ volts). Regarding the Idle, have you just adjusted the idle at warm mode?

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Yes my first two alternators went out that way. But then the leak stopped happening. Not sure why, but the last three alternators have been bone dry.

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

The body doesn't have a straight piece of sheet metal on it. I love it. It's perfect for the trails and my teenage son. However, the interior used to look like it was used to haul bulk oil, used oil that is, in open containers. Stains everywhere. Carpet was horrendous. Interior is so dusty...

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Don't have any parts yet. What I'll need, for starters, includes: Crank sensor Cam sensor Crank gear (because i buried that damn pin) Timing plate Valve gaskets EGR gasket Intake manifold gasket Spark Plugs Spark plug wires OEM timing belt tensioner (maybe) Compression tester assembly/tool...

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

No, actually, I have no idea where the fuel filter is located. I'm sure it's past due for replacement. I see the diagram on page 13F-8 of the FSM, but that doesn't tell me anything at all, really. Where is it? Is it in the engine bay? I don't know how to test for a vacuum leak. What would I...

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Not sure. I never did the plugs, so they are at least 2 years old. I bought the truck with right around 190,000 miles on it. It has 210,000 miles now. They aren't OEM plugs, so at least they aren't 210,000 miles old :-) I don't know how i'd know (I'm not even remotely mechanically inclined)...

Thanks for that. I was wondering about it, if people replace them in pairs or not. It's another $35 for a replacement cam sensor.

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Bonus question. What should I do about cleaning stuff up? My valve covers are filthy, and the inside of the plenum...yikes! What do you recommend I clean this stuff with? Also, should I wipe down the intake inlets that leads into the cylinders? Or would crud fall into the cylinders and...

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

Made more progress today. Successfully removed the intake manifold. Wow is there a lot of bolts to that process. Will be interesting to see if I can reinstall that thing correctly in a few weeks! So I finally pulled the crank sensor and found something very odd. Check this out: Then I...

Misfire, stalling on Braking 3.5L gen 2.5 Montero

Wow that idle video sounds terrible! sounds like it's missing 3 cylinders, not 1, and what is that periodic growling noise? Sounds like a loose motor mount or something is vibrating the whole car. I have no idea what is causing those things, I am far, far from being a mechanic, but i agree...

NOT Firing on all cylinders - Gen 2.5

So its decision time. How much money do I pour into this thing? I am sckeptical that I have the right tools and ability to rebuild the engine. Consider that the only thing remotely like this I've ever done was a one cyclinder lawn mower in high school shop class 30 years ago. I can...
