Siberian husky as a family dog?

Ahhh, puppy fur.....what a cutie. The guard hairs will grow in. What color are the eyes? I used to let mine off leash but not any more. She'd rather chase squirrels than come back.

The SAR Dog flunkie needs a replacement/buddie

A good friend of mine is a SAR / Working dog trainer...she prefers malinois'. As far as banning certain breeds, get a certificate from the vet saying it's a mix.... I had to do this for my last dog (which looked like a pure-bred GSD). Since he was a rescue, there was no way of telling for sure.

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

A .45-70 lever is pretty good at killing unhappy bears.

Before GPS - Map and Compass

We teach and qualify SAR folk and they can't even HAVE electronic devices with them while they're being certified....which doesn't mean they don't start using them as soon as they're certified :(

Before GPS - Map and Compass

Teaching land nav, I've seen all sorts of weird stuff - in addition to the odd problems I've mentioned above, there was this one SAR Dog handler we were trying to get certified as a NASAR SAR Tech... she couldn't get anywhere on the land nav course, she'd literally get lost on the first leg...

Before GPS - Map and Compass

Not only do I carry real compasses, I have at least three of them with me. I've had them break, point off in weird directions, etc. I have three so I can get a 2 out of 3 vote on which way to go. I also check when I buy compasses in the store, to make certain the one I select is in agreement...

The SAR Dog flunkie needs a replacement/buddie

A friend of mine in California has/had Bernese Mountain Dogs for SAR... But, it's not the breed so much as the temperament of the dog.

Siberian husky as a family dog?

Yes. Huskies have the reputation for being very stoic and insensitive to pain (seeing mine sleeping on ice at -30 makes me believe it). They also like to jump and dig so fences need to be built with that in mind.

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

Thats true, but on the other hand not having the ability to defend yourself is an even worse situation.

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

[Terminator voice]We'll be back.....[/Terminator voice] I for one welcome the new additions to the United States of America: Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Nunavut and Inuvik (our territories are overseas). Although designing a flag with 57 stars might be tough....Hmm...

    Clean up?

While camping rough (ie, not in the toy hauler): As soon as the meal is cooked, all the food is removed from the pots (scraped out), and a large pot of water is heated. The dirty dishes are washed with hot water and soap (usually campsuds) thoroughly, rinsed in hot water and air dried. Kind...

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

Five minutes is pretty good, actually. Some department in Tennessee (Knoxville?) was in the news last week with a 13 minute average response time. How long does it take to pitchfork, stab, bludgeon or shoot someone? Thats why depending on the state to protect you is folly: When seconds...

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

Well, we don't know how firearms (if any were there at all, hunter could be bow hunter, black powder hunter, trapper) were stored. It sounds as though he had literally no impact on the events, except to have gone to work. The mother seems to have demonstrated particularly poor judgment in that...

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

So, the 49 hookers in Van shouldn't have been there? The 3 that Homolka/Bernardo killed were just crap happening? The 14 Women in Motreal had it coming for being in an engineering class? The guy who killed the cop in Ottawa (and articulated that he was going over to Tims to kill someone else)...

Do you feel the need to have a weapon when camping

Right. Like Canada didn't have that mutant Pickton in BC who was killing and burying girls on his hog farm (he confessed that he had killed 49 and wanted to kill 1 more to make it an even 50, was convicted of only 6), or Homolka, who went on a killing spree with her husband Bernardo, or that...
