Manual says to be done at 105,000 miles for a 2001-2006 Montero. Also have them replace the water pump and drive (serpentine belt) since they have to take those off anyway. Most places near me quoted about $500 for just timing belt. $700 or so for everything.
Entire time was 2 hours. Go to the FSM link in my signature and download the 2003 Service Manual. It is a large .zip file, but contains everything in several linked PDFs. Just start with the index and search for the speakers and audio wiring diagrams. I did everything using basic...
Spent some more time under the truck last night. Greased the u-joint on the front drive shaft and checked the 4WD system again.
More investigating with the vacuum lines showed that the solenoids seem to be in working order. The hose lines also seem to not have any leaks or cracks. Freewheel...
Thanks cnutco,
The factory amp is enough for me. Right now I'm still working on the whine from the front axle. I think it just needs a new freewheel clutch solenoid, but I am checking all the vacuum lines for leaks as well.

Installed a new subwoofer in the rear. This one fits perfectly in the space and has a rubber isolator ring around the bolt holes to prevent vibration...
I would also check EGR Valve and Vacuum lines. I had a shop install them backwards which caused many cold idling issues on my 2001. They later noticed and told me they fixed them because someone had reversed them. They were the only ones who ever did any work on it so they told me they...
Added some grease to the rod, it still had some left on it and would move with my hand. In 2H the vacuum line closest to the diff has a strong pull and moves the rod into the freewheel clutch. In 4H the vacuum line on the other side has a weaker vacuum, but the rod does not move at all when it...
What type of grease did you use on the solenoid?
Also, my test of the freewheel clutch solenoid (the one under the air filter housing) showed that creating a vacuum on solenoid B and adding voltage to solenoid A did NOT release the vacuum. This should indicate that there is a problem with...
You will have to disassemble the upper panel and then the lower panel. This link shows the basic idea. http://www.fixya.com/cars/t6193344-size_rear_speaker_subwoofer
Also download the 2003 Field Service Manual from the link in my signature. It has the diagram for removing the speaker as well...
Thanks guys. I do really like this one. As soon as I have the whine noise fixed, I will start taking some more trips to the mountains. Any tips you guys have would be helpful.
Now the issues/maintenance and the fixes as I find them. I will make a build/adventure thread after I am confident with the vehicle.
I have the capability to do almost everything myself, but there is a shop nearby that I would like to evaluate since I have not yet found a good one. I also have...
So my 2001 Montero, my first car has been wrecked.
Here it is on the last trip to the mountains.
...and after it found some black ice during the snow storm. It pulled off the road onto a dirt bank and then rolled/tumbled at least twice. I was the only passenger and I have no injuries.
I...
Check here for the electrical diagram in the FSM. They usually list the ohm ratings for the audio system. I know they did for the Infinity system in the 2003 Montero FSM.

Good to hear that it was fixed. I would think that a bad coil may have caused a ground/voltage issue in the wiring harness resulting in the traction lights.
