What gauges would you consider essential?

I'd put the gauges on the A-pillar, so you don't have to look down to see them.....

4x4 Mini School Bus on CL in NM

My SAR team acquired a surplus AF bus, a 20-passenger Bluebird on a 67 International 4x4 DRW chassis....pretty cool. We converted it into a more or less mobile command post and ran it for 10 or more years... The main problem with it was a big gas engine (a 370? Something like that) and used a...

4-wheeld military trailer - street legal?

Looks like it has a fuel port on the side....I'm guessing something like an M37 weapons carrier?

4-wheeld military trailer - street legal?

Wouldn't it depend on the weight, it having brakes and lights?

Went to my first SAR meeting last night

As far as learning the knots, get a couple of pieces of 6mm climbing quality rope (about 6' long each). Keep one or both with you and whenever you have idle time for your hands, practice tying the knots so you can do it in your sleep, upside down, in a snow drift with a very large wolf licking...

    Let's talk making great images.

In junior high, and high school I was quite the camera nerd. I had inherited quite a lot of high-end, professional camera equipment like 3 Nikon F bodies, a Nikon FTN body, a bunch of lenses, even a Mamiya 645... lots of stuff. And I knew everything about exposure, lenses, filters, tricks for...

Went to my first SAR meeting last night

It's out of print... and frankly I didn't think it was that good: Lots of CMC product placement (somewhat understandable but there are ways of doing rescue without using every product CMC sells).. try this, I have the first ed and it's OK...

    Turbodiesel Ambulance on CL

And it's the 7.3l engine, I assume. Good engine. Although $12.5K seems a lot for the 4x4 conversion....

    When cracking eggs....

One handed, and I always crack them into another vessel - to make sure the egg is good. I was OCONUS, got a dozen eggs from the commissary and one of them was very bad....and ruined the rest of the ingredients I had (all I had for this particular dish, too).

    Vehicle Fire Extinguisher?

Yeah. Big like one of those 45,000 pound bright red trucks with 750 gallons (or more) of water....... A fully involved vehicle isn't a candidate for any handheld extinguisher. All you can hope to do is try and get the people out.

Garmin GPS Map 60 or newer Oregon?

After all the issues in the State of Oregon this past couple of weeks, I hear Garmin is going to rename that unit ... To NOTOREGON

    Hydrulic vs. Electric Winch

The main problem in off-road work is that hydraulic winches only work when the engine is on. The main advantage is continuous operation when the engine is working, and more power....usually.

    Antenna gain question

Not really. low (unity) gain antennas tend to be somewhat wider bandwidth, but thats about it. I prefer high-gain antennas myself.

    Volunteer SAR "Perks"

When I was VERY active with SAR teams, I used to keep very good records of my expenditures - gear, meals while on SAR missions, mileage, etc. I had so much mileage logged in a contemporaneous, hand-written notebook that my accountant didn't want to claim it: He said that claiming that much...

Do you guys have a piece of legendary gear?

Plain old Coleman 2-burner gas stove......I bought it (used) when I was 16, I think. All I've ever needed to do to it is replace (once) the generator tube, the tank, pump, etc are still original and still working. I've cooked meals for 100 on it, and used it for solo car camping as well. My...

    Medic Bags

I've had good service from Conterra products, and have a Responder-II bag in each vehicle. My big bag is a Kifaru Navigator with E&E attached, however... I have tried a lot of different bags, and I'm still looking for the right one.
