The original AT suspension was definitely not a torsion bar suspension in the traditional sense. I.e., they didn't use a twisted bar as in typical torsion bar truck front suspensions.
It was a Torflex suspension. Per Dexter: "The wheel/hub spindle is attached to a lever, called the torsion...
Rob, have you ever towed a trailer with a torsion axle suspension?
I couldn't wait to upgrade my suspension from the torsion axle to the AT TAAS 2 suspension. Night and day difference in its ability to handle rough terrain.
Yep...tried it out today, actually. Worked great. I really like how easy it is to enable/ disable on demand. Hill climbs are much, much easier now; the Montero just climbs right up.
Although, I have to say, that LSD I had was pretty good for not being a locking differential. But, I'm sure glad...
With State Farm, I have full coverage for the trailer itself and contents against damage/theft/etc. Liability is covered by the policy on my tow vehicle.
Yes, get the parts from Wil.
Install of the suspension is easy enough. The rear is suprisingly easy. The front is too, except for lining up the shock with the spring. You can also take the strut assemblies to a shop and simply pay them (probably $100 or so) to assmble the new struts for...
I'm not sure what the largest tire size you can fit without a lift. I can tell you that with the OME HD lift, you can fit 33" tires. You can also swap in the Mitsubishi 4.9:1 gears into the diffs to help out if you do go up in size; although, some don't seem to mind running the stock 4.3:1...
I'm curious as well. I have the same issue with my Overland. Love the tent; just don't like the mattress.
I use a 1" thermarest on top of the mattress and that has worked well for me. I can still leave it in the tent when I close it up.
Wow, I haven't looked that hard for one, but at the local gun club they sell them for a bit more.
Bobby, either the 686 or a Browning Citori would be a great find if you can get one in your price range. Either could be serviced by any competent gunsmith and would last you a long, long time.
Welcome to ExPo.
They do pretty well off-road actually. The '04 will have traction control which I understand does a nice job of engaging quickly to keep the truck moving.
Aftermarket support is going to be the only downside of choosing this over a Land Rover or Toyota LC. But, ARB...
I've never seen a quality O/U in that price range. You might be able to pick up a used Beretta Silver Onyx for around $1k-1300.
My hunting shotgun is my 870 and I've done pretty well with it for ducks and geese, but I've always liked the Beretta A391 Xtrema2 Synthetic.
I found a used one for...
