HELP ME DECIDE!!! Newbie needs advice

Went through the same search a year and a half ago with similar criteria to yours. I voted against these: Trooper-weak link GM 4L30 auto trans, oil burning due to faulty piston design Bronco/Blazer/Suburban/Ram Charger/Cherokee/Wagoneer-cheap and plentiful, mechanically reliable, horrifying mpg...

black, If you're planning on running 235/85s, you're going to want to go with a 16x6" or a 16x7" rim. 235/85 tires are quite narrow at 9.25" wide...so a 16x8" rim is too wide. Many pics of this tire size here ---> link 235/85 on a Montero (16" Montero Sport rims) ---> link

If you like the skinny tire look, which arguably does better both off-road (grip) and on-road (mpg), two common 16" sizes are 235/85 (~31.7") and 255/85 (~33.3").

I'm not one who cares much for seat covers either, but these from Cabela's are a good value and look decent, too. CABELAS IK-521945 Seatcover, TrailGear Front Bucket

Scott, unless your upper control arm bushings are completely worn out, I would just stick to the upper ball joints, which usually wear out before the bushings do. That said, if you can see your bushings are deteriorated or you want to get everything done at the same time while the suspension is...

New owner of a 98 Montero

Mole, you've done quite a bit of work, congrats...I bet your trucks purrs! It'd be great if you could list brand and part numbers for your radiator, shocks, transmission gasket/filter and sway bar bushings so that they can be added to the parts list sticky. Thanks in advance!

Why do my interior lights pulse like a disco ball gone bad?

Nathan, your voltage seems to be in spec, but what you are not considering is amperage. It's possible for an alternator to put out the proper voltage, but the amperage output could be faulty (too low in your case). Given your dimming lights I'm guessing this is the condition...the alternator is...

You'd have to remove the fan/fan shroud, front skid plate and possibly some hoses/belts, but you could replace just the bolt...who knows, it may have been replaced already. Either way, it's a driveway job.

Make sure you have the updated crank bolt...it's the only real point of mechanical failure on these 3.5L engines. From the dealer: MITSUBISHI 1100A141 Crankshaft Bolt, 3rd Version (earlier versions are obsolete, prone to failure and should be avoided) MITSUBISHI MR 994412 Crankshaft Bolt Washer

Welcome to the forum. Glad you picked it up, I've been watching that ride on craigslist for the past few weeks wondering why it wasn't selling. I have a straight rear bumper in my garage with your name on it...I'll never need it again. Hit me up if you're interested, I'm in Santa Monica.

    finding montero for dad

I'd say get him a Gen 3. Much more comfortable road manners than a Gen 2, with a more modern interior, yet still plenty capable off road. The LSD is far less complicated than the later traction control system, and still works good. In my mind simpler is better when it comes to electronics in...

Possible Gen 1 Purchase, Reality Check Needed

Time capsule...I was surprised by all the rust in the engine compartment though, given the condition of the rest of the vehicle.

Upper Control arm and Ball joint question

Is your $800 quote including only the replacement of the upper and lower ball joints? That would be 10 hours of shop time at $80. I'm guessing most shops could do it in 5 hours, but I don't know the official book time for the job. Seems a little high just for labor to me though... And no, you...

    Updated crank bolt question.

The crank bolt washer is known as belleville washer, or cupped spring washer, and is slightly conical in shape. It can be used as a form of lock-washer, or in other cases as a dampener. Some swear belleville washers, like any lock washer, should never be reused, others claim it's ok. In this...

I agree with jeep, probably a bad alternator but clean your battery terminals first.

    Optima batteries.

The Sears Die Hard Platinum line are rebranded Odyssey batteries...they can be had for +-$180, if you catch them on sale. They come in Types 35, 34/78 and 65. For example ---->Link I'm running two Platinums on my rig and they are exceptional. I stayed away from Optima because I've read too...
