    Would you buy it?

At this point, most any Gen 2.5 you find will need need timing belt, suspension, brakes, etc unless there's proof the previous owner recently completed such services. These cars are at minimum 15 yrs old. I would budget the cost of those repairs into any Gen 2 or 2.5 purchase. That said, a...

New to me montero gen 2.5

There are two common jobs when base-lining a Montero of unknown history. 1--Front of the engine This includes: timing belt, water pump, front cam seals, crank seal, revised crank bolt/washer<----the revised crank bolt is critical 2--Top of the engine This includes: valve cover gaskets, spark...

New to me montero gen 2.5

Your HCs seem a little high. Mine were last measured as follows: 15 mph MAX 47, AVE 7, MEAS 0 25 mph MAX 31, AVE 6, MEAS 1 So you might be burning some oil that is leaking past the valve stem seals, or you might be getting an incomplete burn and need new plugs/wires/coils... That said, as long...

New to me montero gen 2.5

Wow, great deal and welcome to the club. At that price you have plenty of wiggle room to fix all your engine issues. I'm guessing your cam seal is what's causing the leak onto the alternator, very common...as are leaky valve cover gaskets, but you mentioned yours look dry. Highly unlikely...

Joinin' the Montero Club with a Gen 2.5

El Norte, Part VII Leaving Seward was difficult. Partly because of the beauty, and partly because it meant one of our crew members was departing. Hank had to catch a flight back to San Francisco, so we returned to Anchorage to send him off. From there Tim and I decided to hit the Denali Highway...

Joinin' the Montero Club with a Gen 2.5

El Norte, Part VI Once in Seward, we hopped aboard a boat to see Kenai Fjords National Park. Utterly breathtaking. My amateur-hour photography could never do the incredible sights justice. It was truly a highlight of the trip. Fox Island Falling water Lonely isle Floater Fliers More...

Joinin' the Montero Club with a Gen 2.5

El Norte, Part V Sorry for the delay in posting the rest of the trip...once I got back to civilization, life got in the way. Anyway, when I last left off, we had made the journey back down from Prudhoe Bay to Fairbanks. The plan was next to travel towards Anchorage, en-route to Denali, and...

Looks clean...not to rain on your parade, but I would hold out for a Gen 2 SR with a locker, or even better, a 97-99 Gen 2.5 with the SOHC 3.5L/locker. I do like the cloth interior more on the LS, though. Good luck!

Which would you buy, 1997 SR or 1999?

Congrats, I think $2500 is a very fair price.

Which would you buy, 1997 SR or 1999?

Actually the 97s have the 3.5L SOHC from the Gen 2.5 and the body style of the Gen 2. It was a transition year. But I agree that the Gen 2 body style is easier to find parts for. Otherwise, like nwoods said, what type of fenders do you like?...mechanically they are identical.

Ah, of course! Now that makes more sense! Btw, Dolomiti, I really like what you're doing with the '88.

    The old 1999 build thread

You're a beast my man...love all the Mitsu projects. Sneaky, I've been really interested in converting to the j-top headlights also, I'd like to know what your source for them is and what's involved in fitting them. Plus, are they really going for $900? :Wow1:

    Igor's 2002 Montero gen 3 build

Welcome to the forum Igor, nice to have another LA based Montero aficionado on board. It'd be great if you could document the head/seals work you plan on doing to add to the knowledge base. That's an interesting crankshaft spanner wrench...where'd you find it?

    Body Lift or not?

Josh, I was facing the same dilemma and ultimately decided that the suspension lift was enough for my overland oriented usage. Remember, the vehicle is fairly narrow as is, and hence tippy. I drove 10k miles last summer with a heavy rooftop tent on the top of the vehicle and was sure glad the...
