    disc-o-bed

Mike Hiscox had a pair in one of his sprinter builds for a while. I wish the Black ones were more easy to find at a reasonable price - I'd consider one for my van, but the street price is crazy. Not a fan of the green color.

    Galaxy Tab A

We have both a Galaxy Tab 4 (7") and a Tab A (8"). I use the Tab4 as the navigation/map tablet, and it works fantastically well. The Tab A is used by the wife, but in my limited use, it seems to be a step-up from the Tab4 in all performance aspects, so it should do just fine for the same job...

What sprinter 4x4 layout for 2 adults/2 kids for camping?

I'd stick to variations on the "50" (or RB150, for the Sprinters, I guess), aka classic "Westy" layout. As mentioned, captains chairs eat a lot of real estate inside. Some kids may be OK sitting sideways, but I hated it - my sisters and I always fought over who got "shotgun" in the front...

    Two Latvians overlanding south

I can do some more research, but things are a little lean for free camping in the area, depending on the season and distance from the city. Anza Borrego Desert State Park and the nearby BLM land are excellent and free, but too hot most days come late spring to early fall. There is precious...

    19' Ford Motorhome

That's a great layout with the front dinette. Solves a lot of problems for the size 3+ family. Doubly so if that seat behind the front passenger seat functions as (or could be upgraded to) a captains chair with a seatbelt. Also, 19' fits under my local parking ordinances, so you'd be OK to...

    WTB - Honda Element AWD

Not true if the vehicle was also sold here in the USA. Canada and USA have a reciprocity arrangement, so any Canadian-market vehicle bearing labeling for that market (CMVSS) that is equivalent to the US FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard) and EPA standards is eligible for import...

    Newbie AWD Astro Overlander Build

I'm guessing you've got 3.42 gears? (Look for RPO code GU6 on your door sticker) Yeah, almost 30" tires with that gearing definitely hurts MPG a bit. Shouldn't be quite that low, though, so follow through with the tuneup. Subscribed and waiting for more!

New guy here with Van questions!

Here's one thread I already had bookmarked: http://astrosafarivans.org/bb2/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=10182 There are several more on this topic on the ASV forum. Have fun!

San Diego! Peter and Dace, Looks like your route will take you right through San Diego on your way to Baja. If you'll have time for a beer or a meal while you pass through, please let me know! Would love to compare Astrid to my Astrolander up close!

Cool rig in Mission Valley, San Diego

Note that the van is an LT40 commercial van, not a smaller passenger van. The 1st-gen LT40s were available with an I6 Diesel direct from VW. The 5.9 is a bigger beast for sure, but its not an inconceivable swap.

New guy here with Van questions!

I'm in year 6 with my Chevy Astro. 3 AWD, 3 4WD, and lifted for the last 4 years. So far, so good. Out here with our desert sand, AWD is the best solution, but I like having 4Low so I can go slower over the rougher stuff without having to ride the brakes, etc. A few enterprising folks have...

AZ Astro Van project - slow build - advice welcomed 2004 AWD LT

Just so we don't get too far out there: They aren't really body on frame. There's a front subframe for the powertrain, but that, and all the rear suspension, bolts to a unibody. They share a lot of parts-bin stuff with GM's light duty trucks (S-10/Blazer), but I wouldn't call them "truck...

    Herbie's Chevy Astrolander/ZMB Build Thread

Not much to report lately, other than we've been out using the van. Most recent projects have been updates to my chuckbox, which in turn lets me reorganize the gear in the van better, but no direct van news for now.

    Cutain Install

I didn't take any pictures, but I used low-profile 3M Dual Lock tape to stick my curtain track to the top of the window glass. I wanted the track to be removable. The low profile stuff is nice because it keeps the track tight to the glass, but it's not rated for quite as many attach/remove...

    Tow Hitch Rating and Recoveries

Tow ratings are based on a lot of factors - brakes, suspension, transmission, etc. For a recovery, you aren't towing so much as doing short term pulling, so in that regard you're in better shape. On the other hand, towing assumes minimal rolling resistance of the towed vehicle, whereas...

What a gut punch. I cannot express how sorry I feel for you, man. Keeping fingers crossed that you can be made somewhat whole again, and that the dirtbags come to justice.
