I usually try to book a 4+ weeks in advance, earlier if possible. It gets really booked up, especially in the summer and around Labor Day. I went to Victoria over Labor Day weekend, but we walked on.
The ferry from Port Angeles to Victoria can be a stressful one to do FCFS - it's doable as you found, but you gotta be super early and flexible. Way less stress if you have a reservation, but that can be hard if you don't know when exactly you'll be back. Reservations can fill up weeks/month in...
I'm a fan of the Plano cases (e.g. Plano 68 or 110qt). They're light weight, spacious, and decently weatherproof as is. Some folks add rubber seals and stuff, but honestly I've had them on the roof in the rain, outside, etc., and never had any water ingress.
I have a few friends who utilize receiver mounted winches and I've considered it in the past, however I have never seen a receiver mounted winch that nests into a bumper like that, pretty cool and unique idea! My friends all basically welded a (single, you mentioned double which is cool)...
You must be a Western Washingtonian, that storm was cool! I might have to try to cross paths with you someday to check out your SAS 1st gen for inspiration I'm up in Kitsap county.
That's an interesting little plate surrounding your interior HVAC vent. Looks like it has a little mount on it for something also? It caught my attention because in my 1st gen Tacoma I'm brainstorming where to mount my phone and GMRS radio mic and whatnot.
What I like about your build is that it's basically an OEM+ SAS using the 80-series as a base. Often when I see someone doing a SAS it's immediately to tons with major modification . This is exactly the type of SAS build I'd be interested in doing one day. Thank you for your effort sharing!
I have this Buetti and use it to primarily run my Alpicool LGCF45. I'm still testing, but it's run the unit for a solid 3-4 days in approx 55-70 deg temperature.
I usually supplement via solar/alternator from my vehicle.
I chose this battery because of price, and form factor- it's rectangular...
Honestly, thank you for the reminder. I need to add some JB Weld and steel-stick type stuff to my kit. I've had friends temp goob up their oil pans or trans pans with it to limp out as well.
I have a Roofnest Sparrow. I like it, but it's not the easiest to collapse/close. I've made some custom modifications that make it easier, but my wife still has trouble.
Wedge style ones or iKamper style ones are all functionally straight forward.
Tires - honestly based on my research prior to purchase, the Duratracs are pretty light for being a hybrid Mud/AT tire. It could be tricky finding something lighter for the style. Maybe moving to an A/T.
I'm learning about SAS as it's something I'm interested in doing one day. This is the first time I've seen a front spring bucket/bracket that is bolt on, is that normal? I like the modularity; typically I see hoops or a box that is fully welded on.
I absolutely LOVE winter camping. The added challenge of getting to even the easiest summer campsites, getting cozy in your gear at night, it's great. I typically prefer to sleep inside my vehicle, but if I bring my son or am feeling fancy I might take the RTT out.
