    Camp shower advice needed

I have a Big Kahuna. It works, but you need to have a large-ish vessel to heat the water, and you have to have car electricity of course. Flow is barely adequate IMO, but IS adequate. That Geyser system looks cool, but the 1 gallon capacity is a bit of a turnoff. I like that you can have the...

    Cool shower product

It's cheaper than buying a Hudson sprayer at the garden center and then adding a shower nozzle. I'm looking at getting a Zodi Extreme shower, which eliminates the step of heating the water in a separate pot (or other heating device) and having to pour it into the sprayer using a separate...

    Scepter Jerry can question

Well...now you know to go slow opening gas cans when the altitude has changed. My NATO steel cans that are 6 or 7 years old remain leak-free when carried on their side, which is my standard procedure in order to minimize vehicle height. Scepter fuel cans...based on the 4 or 5 different ones I...

    Issues with Bosch AGM?

There is extensive info here about the Odyssey/former Die Hard Platinum Group 31 battery needing a higher charging voltage than most other batteries, and higher than most common vehicles supply. I don't know what size your Group 49 is, but is it possible that the Bosch Group 49 AGM has a...

Do you really need an AC inverter?

One thing that I haven't seen discussed here is: what if someone else on the trip has a device that has a unique AC battery charger and you want to charge it? I carry one or two very small 150W inverters for computer, cam batteries, etc. They travel in a bag buried behind the driver's seat and...

In Gaia which maps do you like?

Standard USGS Topo (or, when visiting National Forest land- FS maps) in Gaia on the phone, simul with Garmin 1:24,000, or Garmin 1:100,000, or Caltopo USGS on the Garmin Montana.

Who overlands for the purpose of photography?

When I go alone, photography is the ostensible reason. There's also sight seeing and exploring, but I'll plan locations/destinations against time of day for photo reasons.

Any news on when ARB's new 'JACK' will be available in US?

I always have the factory Toyota jack with 1x1' plywood squares attachable to the base, and if going really remote I'll bring either a Humvee scissors jack ($40 on ebay) or an aluminum floor jack. I once bought a HiLift. Carried it a couple of times, then realized there was no way to use it on...

    ROXOR: The Willys CJ3 Reinvented

At 62, I still haven't owned, and have no plans to ever own a car/vehicle equipped with an automatic trans. But, I could change my mind in the future.

    Are Alu-Box bear proof ?

I bought the one low-end Zarges case that I have because it was, in my estimation, small animal proof. Small means mice, rats, birds, raccoons, etc. Bears don't count as 'small.' And this:

    iPhone surrender

Good point that bears repeating: Just because your phone has a bunch of different functions doesn't mean you have to use them. I think the text/email communications part of the smartphone is more useful than the talk part, especially since the phone designers completely abandoned proper 'hold...

Max sized inverter from a cigarette lighter plug

+1 to running a dedicated line--mine's 12Gauge red black zip--from the battery to a dedicated cig socket somewhere in the car. I put mine in the center console storage thing. Fuse near the battery end. Most cig sockets are fused either 10A or (rarely) 15A. Every 12 watts at 12Volts is 1 amp...

My license (and personal information) all over the internet?!

There's no need to look up the FCC listings for amateur licensees when a few minutes of Googling will get you just about anyone's address and phone number, and more. Public records have been digitized, and are freely available. I have a friend in San Francisco that maintains an extremely low...

“One size fits all” stove/camp cooking setup?

2 burner propane for car camping...it's too easy...and they're relatively cheap. I have a basic Coleman 2 burner that won't die. For backpacking, well...I find that the freeze-dried food hasn't improved in 40+ years. The hairspray stoves always seemed like bad design. Putting the fuel that...

    Zarges boxes for broke people?

The only reason I was motivated to get a Zarges case as my dry food case was that Action Packers are so space inefficient. I thought it'd be an added bonus that the Zarges, unlike the Action Packer, was also small animal-proof, where as an Action Packer could easily be chewed through by a small...

5-7 days in the back country of Death Valley....

For trash, I use compactor bags. Double them up for excellent protection against liquids/odors leaking out. While traveling, I hand compress them and twist the neck and secure with a #2 spring clamp. In camp, I hang them open. The spring clamp doubles as a way to hang the bag in camp.
