Curious to get your take on the new direction of Disco

I won't comment on styling, as that is always progressing and very opinion based. However, I don't see where the "abandoning off-road" sentiments come from. Other than the tires and large wheels, every new Rover has been more capable than it's replacement. Disco1>Disco2>Disco3>Disco4 have all...

New Discovery Concept looks like a Ford Explorer, can be driven via remote control

The same applies to ALL vehicles. Land Rover is no exception. However, I disagree. It's our thinking, as custodians of these cars, that has to adapt. We simply need to learn new skills, both for troubleshooting and repair procedures, to keep these newer cars on the road as long as we wish...

New Discovery Concept looks like a Ford Explorer, can be driven via remote control

So much hate... Isn't this just a concept still? When was the last time a new generation of Land Rover came out that, stock-for-stock, wasn't more capable than the last? My two hopes. The 'command' seating position of the current LR3/LR4 is retained and that it also retains the same interior...

    Land Rover Transparent Bonnet Technology

I wonder if it might have prevented this mishap to the LR3s predecessor? This was a classic 'up the steep side without walking it first' mistake, followed by a down the steeper side. Maybe a camera would have gave me the time to hard left it at the top?

First Day of LR3 Ownership - Perfect Vehicle - Right Until It's Not

Glad that your problem was resolved quickly. Mine was the alternator going out on the 3rd day of ownership (69K miles). Been perfect ever since (103K miles).

Overland Journal Project Land Rover Discovery 4 (LR4)

The discussion around spacers has been that some claim that relocating the top of the spring/shock assembly puts it in a position to contact the control arm at certain suspension positions. The result is claimed to be the eventual wearing of a hole into the airbag and a corner that won't come...

Expedition Portal Project: 2008 Range Rover Sport

I've read more like 70K-100K. Either way, if there turns out to be noticeable improvement it seems a fair trade off. I've seen 'Merican truck lift kits that consistantl go through bushings, ball joints, and rod ends.

Expedition Portal Project: 2008 Range Rover Sport

Some have said that the LR3 and RRS suspension bushings are different. I, personally, have not compared part numbers yet but if the rumor is true a 'downgrade' to LR3 bushings could result in increased articulation. The truck already looks great, even with just the basic changes you've already...

Question on GAP IIDT + J Rods, vs GAP vs J Rods

I'm sure others will chime in, but from everything I have read it's all cumulative until the airbags are maxed or the height sensors are maxed. Now, running with a maxed suspension, with little to no droop, is likely to cause other issues.

    On The Fence

Isn't the GX a Lexusized 4-Runner? If so, seems the smart money is on the 4-Runner (w/appropriate traction options) over the GX. Drive them. Drive them again. You can read about capabilities and reliability. You can read about aftermarket availability. Sometimes, just getting in and feeling the...

    Off Roading in a LR3 vs LR4?

My LR3 has a sand mode. While it's difficult to compare all the parts numbers because of running improvements and such, I believe that from the transmission back, the LR3 and LR4 share drivetrains. I know the LR4 operates on a faster CANBUS so the Terrain Response is different because of that -...

GAP Diagnostic– new products / IIDTool update announcement 12/2013

Nope... actual, real groaning from me. Last time I used an iPhone, iTunes was a horrid piece of software and the fixed battery let me down all the time. And those tiny, tiny screens. :wings: I do applaud the efforts on the core IIDTool product though.

ETA for Android software? Any way of using the unit if you don't have a iPhone?

    New LR3 owner

IIDTool or Faultmate for *all* the codes and to update software for any problem areas. Update bluetooth module software for reliable connection to modern phones. The Faultmate guys have figured out how to unlock 'nav-on-move'. (maybe it can be replicated on the IIDTool also?) Check sunroof...

2006 Range Rover vs Discovery 3 (edit - looking at a 2006 rr hse tomorrow)

Correct me If I'm wrong, but by 2006 the BMW motor and tranny had been replaced with the same Jaguar based units as the LR3 and RRS. I agree, other than cosmetics and tech gadgets, the cost of ownership should be close to a wash.

    Questions for the IIDTool-saavy

Not sure if this is directly applicable to the LR4 or not, but the old VentureCam add on for the Range Rover has been successfully added to LR3s and Range Rovers. Basically all the hardware was installed and hooked up, per factory. The control box (which the cameras connect to) was hung on the...

GAP Diagnostic– new products / IIDTool update announcement 12/2013

Nice job. Looking forward to trying out the new versions. A few questions from a (slightly overwhelmed) owner of 'the other tool'...How does Gap handle the flashing files? Are they on your site for download? Do you maintain old versions to go back to, if needed? Do they have any info about the...

    Choosing my first overland vehicle

Correct me if I'm wrong. It seems that many of those that talk about early, premature or constant maintenance on Land Rovers (LR3s especially) have not owned them or driven them off road much. Those that actually own, and use, Land Rovers mention the same exact things, however the harshness of...

    Choosing my first overland vehicle

In this day of information overload it's easy to "over" read, "over" research, and make up your mind (as to the perfect truck) before even driving the subjects of our attention. It's a mistake many folks make these days - including me on occasion. I would strongly caution one to keep internet...

    Choosing my first overland vehicle

Agree with the Montero idea. A '94-'96 Montero SR (rear locker) can be had for under $3000 all day long. A slightly newer one (still with locker) might go as high as $6000. Fairly flexible IFS up front (for an IFS) and a really flexy solid rear make for a surprisingly capable truck. Of your...
