How to tell if '02-'04 Montero Sport has rear LSD?

This won't help you if you're shopping long-distance (unless the seller is a friendly guy and willing to do this for you), but here's a simple way to check if you can get your hands on the vehicle. Jack up the rear so that both wheels are off the ground. Release the parking brake. Spin one of...

    Deal or no Deal?

Eek. I'd have a problem with a shop that charged over $1100 to install a timing belt. There are a variety of local, independent garages in my area that do good work. Some charge through the nose, others have excellent reputations both for quality and affordability. Word of mouth, Yelp, etc are...

    Deal or no Deal?

Again, it depends upon what's important to YOU. When I buy a vehicle or motorcycle, I'm never in a hurry. Doing all the research and finding the best vehicle for the money is part of the enjoyment of it for me, and fly-n-drives can make it a bit of an adventure, too. YMMV.

Skinny tires on a Gen 3?

No kidding! I've trimmed both front and back bumpers way up to increase clearance and will just live with them until they get munched. I did cut an opening for the hitch in that plastic fascia thingy that you're using for a mud scoop. :sombrero: I've torn it loose several times and now it's just...

    Deal or no Deal?

The timing belt kit is cheap, but paying for the work is not. Still, you could likely get that done at a small shop with a good reputation for $600-700 or so. The allow wheels are available online for $100 each or so. I've never felt the need for studded snows on the Montero. I have them on my...

    Gen 3 factory rear diff.

He means that it has a lock function between front and rear output, i.e., "high lock" and "low lock." It's not called a "locker," but in the same sense that a locking differential locks its two axles, the transfer case can lock its two driveshafts.

Check that sunroof drive motor TODAY!

My Gen III has never had any sunroof problems...it always works perfectly. But I have read regular reports of folks having the miserable experience of having the thing stop working. I came this close to losing mine recently. Heed my warning, boys and girls! I had pulled the headliner down a...

    Gen 3 factory rear diff.

Er, that's steering. He's talking about the gears in the diff. If that Montero is an American model, there's no OEM locker, as stated above.

    Gen 3 factory rear diff.

No, they didn't. There's no locker in that diff unless someone put an aftermarket unit in there. It should be a limited slip. The gear ratio is most easily seen on the firewall data plate. It's likely that your XLS has a lower ratio than the Ltd.

    Diesel Pajero Import

It doesn't matter whether it's from Canada or any other country; the same import restrictions apply. The only consideration with Canadian vehicles is that most of them are North America spec and importation is not a problem. I've imported from Canada and it's not hard at all, but be prepared for...

    Skinniest 265/75's?

Are you talking about sidewall bulge (section width) or something else that gives the impression of greater width? They should all have a tread width of 265 mm. You might consider a narrower tire such as a 255/80 or even a 235/85, which is about an inch narrower and almost exactly the same...

    Open source 4x4 concept

Given current manufacturing practices, I'd be surprised to see a regression from the monocoque chassis to a body-on-frame vehicle. Of course, it really depends upon the target market; what subset of the buying public will be targeted, and can such a vehicle be affordable unless it appeals to the...

    What is my Monty worth?

Read through the Monteros on Craigslist thread and you'll note that values vary to an amazing degree depending upon region. It is, however, a generally-accepted fact that you'll lose your shirt on accessories if you sell the thing as a package. You'll almost always recoup more of your investment...

    I am a #@!!*%$ bonehead

Yup, it's all installed. Just have to mount the head unit Thursday when I get a day off. A whole bunch of other little Montero mods are happening, but I'm waiting for a weather window that coincides with time off to get one last big job out of the way. Stay tuned for details....:smiley_drive:

    I am a #@!!*%$ bonehead

Hahahaa...yeah, I'm hoping that I WILL NOT need a spare wiring harness or extra extinguisher! I'm working a stretch of 12-hour shifts and will try to take a pic when able. On a Gen III Montero the main harness passes through the firewall on the passenger side (USA) behind the glove compartment...
