    Modern Farm Truck

I'll start a thread on the 4Runner soon, but in the meantime, here's a link to the build progress on my CJ5 project. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/147804-CJ5-Resto-Mod-Project/page8

The truck is now up at 4x4 Labs, getting front and rear bumpers. So I took the opportunity to get some work done on my CJ5 project. Here's a link to the build progress, if anyone's interested. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/147804-CJ5-Resto-Mod-Project/page8

More work today. Hopefully the cooling system will be finished and then it's off to the muffler shop to get a compete exhaust system. We're going one size large than stock and using a medium size turbo muffler. Hopefully this will give it a small boost in power, but keep it quite enough. I do...

Mounting the body proved to be a real PITA as no new body mounts are available in the original style, so I made them using a kit from a company I wish to remain nameless. Why give them any credit for work that I had to do to make their parts work? Here's what the parts description on their...

Rear brake lines were still needed, and I didn't have the originals, so I hope these don't look too custom. Parking brake balance bar, adjusted prior to brake bleeding. One more pic for posterity.

Plumbing the brake system is something I like to do. I don't know why, but I like the mechanical work, it's soothing. Bending lines to look OEM is very challenging and I have come up with some techniques that really help. The power brake system I bought from Parts Mike uses a Corvette style...

Final Push to Drive It Had a small window to get some work done on the Jeep. I figured since we had most of the parts to get it done, why not just do it? Well, time is the biggest factor. Two months ago, the project sat as a chassis with drivetrain, body and wiring. All the mechanical systems...

That's great to hear that I'm not the only one who thinks so. I had a customer a couple years ago that insisted his transmission needed to be rebuild, I felt it didn't, but I kept my thoughts to myself. I took the front and rear cases off and inspected it and it looked brand new, so... I put it...

Update. The truck is mostly done and I have moved on to other projects. The truck is now up at 4x4 Labs to get bumpers. Luke has designs that are really very cool and difficult to make without the right tooling, so it made sense to have him do the job. While it's there, Luke is using it as a...

Watch out, he's got dimple dies now. I want to have some dies made that punch the hole and dimple in one process. I've even though about custom shapes to help retain the OEM character of my builds. Speaking with some tool and die makers, it's possible, but expensive.

For the record, this truck, on 35's sits 4" taller than stock suspension and 31" tires.

The minimum amount of bump, or up-travel, that I shoot for is 4". I can usually get that (on Toyotas) with a few simple tricks. Obviously tire size plays a huge roll in that equation, and not just in fender clearance. The 25% rule of vertical separation on the axle end link brackets comes into...

Doors are nice. This guy didn't want them...ever. I like options though so if it were my personal rig, I would do it like you did yours. On my personal Land Rover I didn't even go though the floor. I bolted the roll cage to the A-pillar with 4 GR8 bolts per side. The Rover A-pillar is robust and...

I had trouble with that area too. You and I both ended up doing about the same thing.

Put the first miles on the truck yesterday and the only issue that came up was a dragging parking brake shoe on the passenger rear. I guess I'm not surprised that there was only one issue. I-dotting and t-crossing has always been my thing, but it's nice, none the less, to get in a truck that you...

Future plans include opening up the rear fender opening, but for now, it will remain un-cut. Until then, tire contact is a concern. It's difficult to build something with future plans in mind and still satisfy the as-buiilt requirements. Those little dogbones for the brakes are cool, aren't...

I agree with you 100%. All of those factors are what make building a suspension stressful. If you get it wrong, you've created a monster. In this particular instance, I don't think any problems exist to any degree to which I am concerned. The minimal ride height and the flat control arm angles...

So you're suggesting that because the suspension is unloaded that there might be wheel hop? The triangulation of the control arms (both vertically and horizontally) was designed to control the axle through it's cycle of travel so there shouldn't be anything weird going on when the tire is...
