Any one know the width of the tread face on a 33x9.5R15 BFG AT

Some manufacturers list a tread width along with section width on the spec tables. BFG unfortunately is not one of them.

Steve Fossett is Missing as of 9/4/07

One of the news reports mentions thunderstorms in the mountains that day. So he could have been caught in the turbulance or down draft from such a storm. Or it could have been the classic case of flying into a cloud with rocks in it. No time to bailout in such case.

    Dutch oven size??

In American usage, Dutch Oven traces back to cast iron pots either made with a Dutch sand-mold process or distributed by Dutch traders. The lid could be domed or rimmed, with or without legs. In modern usage it covers any heavy pot of similar size and shape, such as the enameled Le Creuset...

Steve Fossett is Missing as of 9/4/07

My guess is that he had the wallet in pocket. In one way or another his body was separated from the crash, dismembered by animals, and any clothing and contents distributed around the area.

My Back Porch: Custom Vehicle Awning

Having done most of my camping in wet climates (Pacific NW), the first thing that I noticed about this awning was its flatness. Great as a sunshade, problematic in rain :)

Give you opinion on two burner stoves...

About the only parts of the old Coleman stoves that needed periodic replacement were the leather seals of the gas tank pressurizing pump. Oh, and the generator, which can get clogged with fuel gunk. Those repair parts are commonly available.

    Keeping warm in the tent

My favorite blanket for covering an air mattress is an one-sided pile sleeping bag (unzipped) made by Patagonia years ago. That material pills a lot, and is not at all windproof, but is bulkier than the newer double sided fleece.

    Dutch oven size??

I have the 10" GSI hard anodized. It's one on my favorite pots, at home and for use with coals. The 10" size does not have legs, but GSI sells a nice stand for it. Without legs I can use it on the stove top. In non-sticking quality it is similar to enameled steel, not quite as good as well...

    Keeping warm in the tent

These thick air mattresses also loose heat around the sides and exposed parts of the top, not just through the bottom. So I like to put a thick fleece blanket on top, with sleeping bags on top of that. Fleece is better than foam for this purpose because it flexes with the mattress.

    Improving maps

I think the trend is toward making detailed road data available in digitial form, such as listed on this Apache NF GIS page http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/gis/aps_gis.shtml as opposed to printed maps. The same goes for topographic maps. Agencies like counties and forest districts have taken on the...

    Keeping warm in the tent

but does the bottom of the sleeping bag always stay on the bottom? Particularly with close fitting mummy bags, the bag turns with the sleeper. If I want to turn in the bag, I have to wear the bag quilt-style, draped over me, and loosely tucked around the edges. I bought a few things from...

    offroad boat trailer

I used to drool over Devlin designs in the Small Boat Journal. I just finished off a gallon of System 3 resin that I bought years ago when dreamed of doing some stitch-and-glue. Mostly I used the epoxy for household repairs, and storage boxes for a pickup bed. .

    Plates, bowls, ect

GSI also distributes plastic dishes that are lighter, cheaper, and more flexible. They are also easy to clean. I have a set of those bowls and cups. For plates I am currently using aluminum ones that nest nicely below my stove set (about 8"diameter). I initially bought one of these plates to...

    Rav-entures

What color is that 2 door? Candy Red? That's the quintessential 'cute ute'. :) For those who aren't familiar with the 1st generation RAVs (up to about 2001), the automatic transmission models had a viscous coupling between front and rear drive shafts. The manual had an open differential...

    offroad boat trailer

I wish I had those tires when draging a 21' sailboat across 50 km of gravel roads on Vancouver Island a number of years ago. This was on the way to sail on the Kyuquot Sound on its NW side (from hwy 19 to Fair Harbour). However they could make lauching a bigger boat harder, since they raise...

A simple weekend on the shores of Lake Michigan

I assume this is Illinois Beach State Park near Zion (almost Wisconsin)? I don't recall camping there, but have biked, and paddled a kayak there. When living in Chicago we either headed west to the Mississippi (Palisades), or north to Wisconsin for camping. If time allowed Door County was our...

    campsite pics..lets see um

The private campground that I used while driving up the Fraser was there at the mouth of Anderson River. To navigate forest roads like this I depend on a combination of the Backroad Mapbooks and my GPS. The GPS is simple handheld unit, without Canadian roads. I have downloaded the major roads...
