My Summer Vacation At Mt. Rainier National Park, WA.

Which campground was this? It looks like there is a lot of debre in the river from last winter (or was it the one before that caused most damage in the park?)

China Head Mountain trip (page 2)

The wiki article on reaction ferry describes how these work, and includes a picture of the Lytton one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reaction_ferry In effect the direction of movement of the boat across the river is determined by the length of two cables the run from the ends of the two pontoons...

China Head Mountain trip (page 2)

I've read some accounts of trips in this area on a BC 4x4 club website. They crossed from the south at (Gold Bridge (Bridge River), ending up at the Gang Ranch bridge across the Fraser. I've poked around the edges of this area, but haven't gotten into the core. One trip I drove down to the...

    Dust in thru rear doors

Max AC often does recirculate, though on both my Toyota and Honda, there are separate recirculate controls. Typically I use recirculate when I'm breathing someone else's dust. When I'm ahead of the pack I switch back to flow-through.

    Dust in thru rear doors

The dust might be coming in through vent holes near the back rather than around the doors. On some cars and suvs you can see louvered openings, on other I suspect they are hidden behind the interior trim and sheet metal. I agree that the forced air flow using the fan and/or AC is the best...

Unique opportunity at Mt. St. Helens

Bear Meadow overlook; is that the one where the photographer got the rapid sequece shots of the actual eruption? What kind of damage is there to the road? About where? I knew those roads were slow in melting out, but haven't paid a lot attention to conditions in the past month.

    Dutch Oven bread pudding.

I like to make a Mexican style bread pudding, capirotada. The key difference is that instead of an milk and egg custard/moistener, it uses a spiced brown sugar syrup, made with raw sugar cones (piloncillo). It is best with lots of dried fruit, nuts, and even cheese. While there are recipes on...

    Tire Repair Kit in action

I keep this kit in the compact spare compartment of my Element (along with other emergency gear). A cargo/sleeping platform covers a full size spare while still allowing access to this gear compartment. Last year on a forest road in eastern Oregon I picked up a broken rat tail file (chainsaw...

Has Anyone Navigated Bowrun Lakes - BC, Canada?

I searched on Clubtread (BC hiking forum) for Bowron Lakes. There were a number of threads. A promising one is http://www.clubtread.com/sforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=20447&SearchTerms=bowron with a link to a photo album http://www.westcoastpaddler.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=81&pos=0

    Best GPS under $300 ?

If you want Canadian roads, be careful about buying online. Some of the less expensive auto-oriented units just have road data for the USA. Garmin's Topo has trails and backroads, but there separate US and Canada products. Another important distinction: do you want the unit to just show where...

    Looking for the right Canoe

Here are few thoughts on construction. Fiberglass inbeds glass fibers in a plastic like polyester or epoxy. The cheapest and heaviest construction uses chopped glass strands. A more expensive form, requiring more hand work, uses woven fiber glass fabric. Kevlar uses the same idea, but...

    Looking for the right Canoe

Since you are a big guy, and want to take family (how many kids?) and gear, you probably should aim for a 17' boat, something like the Mad River Horizon 17. They describe it as a 'Royalex performance hull'. What I think that means is that they tried to made the bow and stern as sharp as...

    Looking for the right Canoe

What's the nearest Wenonah dealer? Boise? Do they carry, or even recommend one of these boats? What lakes are you thinking of paddling? I wouldn't recommend one of these 18'+ boats for a river, not even the gentler parts of the Salmon. As a first boat, buying used is a good idea. Like...

    Looking for the right Canoe

Years ago I had a Wenonah kevlar canoe, a Jensen 18 http://www.wenonahracing.com/marathon/Models/18_Jensen.html It was a nice boat, light, fast, easy paddling even for one person. Pretty too in that golden kevlar color. But much better on flat water than coastal or shallow water (i.e. with...

    Best GPS under $300 ?

I'm not sure what you mean by load your maps. Are you talking about print maps that you intend to scan, or ones that are already in digital format? I'd suggest, for a start, go to a store that has demo GPS units on display, and explore the maps that they already have. Start with one intended...

    field knives

The Bushman can't be any good, it's too cheap! What's the point in buying a knife if you can't brag about how much it cost? :) I bought a full size one some years ago, and liked it enough to buy two minis later. The large one is my heavy-duty kitchen knife. For example, I last used it with...

    12 Volt Camp Fans

In the PNW I don't usually have great cooling needs, so I've found the Coleman "Cool Zephyr Ceiling Fan" to be enough. On warm nights when the interior of the tent (the hard shell Honda Element in my case) gets stuffy (in the 70s) it's enough to stir up the air. Currently it is hung...

    Black Bear & Imogene

There was an incident several years ago in which a couple in a rental Jeep went over the side somewhere around the Steps. I didn't see any discussion in the local paper account as to whether they were in low range or not. They probably did not have much experience.

    Black Bear & Imogene

Which parts of the route required low range? I expect it is comforting to have on the steps and the swtichbacks. Any particularly rough on climb to Black Bear pass from the east? Last time I was in the area was in the fall several years ago. I looked at Black Bear from the bottom, but...

    Shade Cloth for Awning

I've bought several short lengths of this open weave shade cloth from a garden shop, not for shade, but for use as floor mat at the entrance of tent. I use it 2 or more layers thick, depending on the space I want to cover.
