Bed Cap or keep my bed rack

I have a Leitner rack on my truck to support the RTT and wanted some security for the bed, so I used polycarbonate roofing panels to enclose it. I used some galvanized pipe to make a sort of hatchback for the rear. I didn't spend much time or money on it - just wanted something to keep wandering...

    Southern Utah Traverse October 2017

Nice report. Do you have a map of the routes you took? Can you be more specific about how your vehicle wasn't up to the task for some bits?

Traction device for over snow travel

You need floatation in snow or mud that deeper than the frame of the vehicle, hence why those track conversions work so well. Increasing the traction provided by a small contact patch would only serve to dig you deeper given the low or nonexistent shear stress capacity of the snow or mud. Look...

    New Truck for my FWC

If you want a lift of any more than about an inch or two then I'd switch to the solid axle 3/4 ton pickups. Lifting IFS just gets absurdly expensive beyond that - you're either paying for lots of good parts and labor for the installation or paying for lots of ****ty parts and rework later on...

Electronic rear lockers vs. a "limited slip differential"?

I drove the land rovers in the Overland expo test track and my biggest complaint was that, due to the automatic systems, I could never get a handle on what the steering radius was or where the vehicle clear would go with a given steering and throttle input. The lockers worked great once they...

    Is my Jeep too heavy?

That means that some component other than the axle/wheel/suspension governs the maximum reliable weight. Could be the frame, the transmission, driveshaft, engine mounts, cooling, brakes, etc. For example, my F150 came from the factory with a 7800lb GVWR, but if I had opted for the 17in wheels...

    Is my Jeep too heavy?

The gvwr is 5700lb and you're at 5800lb empty. Yeah, you're too heavy. Your brakes and the frame and everything else is designed to a given weight plus a payload and you're exceeding that while driving down the highway at 70mph. Get a truck if you want to carry so much crap.

Is the GX built on a similar 25 yr platform as the LX and Land Cruiser?

I can't find a reference online for the 25 year service life. Maybe it's true and it's buried on the tenth page of the google results, or maybe it's one of those self-referencing internet facts. Because marketing.

    2017+ F350 RTT Mounting Options

RCI Metalworks makes a half-height rack for RTTs for fords. Can't comment further, as I haven't ever seen one in person and I bought a Leitner before I knew about the RCI rack.

FS: Yaesu FT 817ND and accessories in Central Texas Make An Offer

I wish that I could make a fair offer for this kit, as it's basically what I've been eyeing for my first ham mobile setup. Good luck with the sale.

    Experience with 2wd difflock?

Yeah, a cross-axle situation requires either fancy driving, good line selection, and room to maneuver or it requires a locker. A locker is an easy solution. Another nice case for a locker is on muddy trails (not a bog) where other vehicles have made some ruts. If those ruts weren't made by a...

    Experience with 2wd difflock?

Grab every traction aid you can. A single diff lock may not be quite as capable as a part-time 4wd system, but it's a hell of a lot better than an open diff.

Bigger is better? Long vs short bed

I have a regular cab with an 8ft bed, 141in wheelbase. I can follow jeeps pretty well on tight trails if I ignore pinstriping from brush, but I wouldn't want the wheelbase any longer. Maybe an extended cab with a 6.5ft bed, for a 145in wheelbase, but I really wouldn't want it to be any longer...

Roof Top Tent Fairings - Anyone Using them? Any improvement in MPG?

I added polycarbonate roofing panels to the sides of my leitner rack to enclose the bed and that added 15% back to my gas mileage after driving around with just the frame and tent, so it's not impossible to see a gain. I wouldn't expect to see a whole lot from ordering the airflow over the top...

    My 2017 Ford F150

I sympathize. I used some polycarbonate roofing panels, and a couple of 2x4s and half-inch pipe, to enclose the bed of my truck. It keeps wandering hands out, provides a nice basement for the tent on top, and improved my gas mileage from the naked frame+tent by about 15%. The "basement" isn't...

    4G LTE tablets?

I'm not sure that swapping the sim cards is going to work well. Legally, the various cell providers are supposed to be generally device agnostic but in reality they tend to register a sim card d to a device specific IMEI. You mention tethering a computer to the phone for internet access - why...

170" 4x4 sprinter off road ability?

With that wheelbase and, more importantly, the A/BO/D angles of that thing I'd rate it more as a soft roader than an offroader. Taking it deeper than forest service roads that haven't been graded for a couple of years is probably asking for trouble.
