Telephoto lens help- trip to Burma (Myanmar)

The 18-135 STM lens from Canon is good glass, but it's redundant with the 18-55 that you're already happy with. It's also much larger and heavier than the 18-55. Note that there are several versions of each lens that we're talking about here - four or five 18-55s, a couple 18-135s, and three or...

Telephoto lens help- trip to Burma (Myanmar)

I'm of the opinion that super zoom lenses involve too much compromise, so I'd steer away from the 18-135 or 18-300 and such. Canon offers a 55-250 STM lens that gets great reviews and should come pretty close to $100 if you shop refurbished or KEH. Stay away from the 75-300 lenses, as they...

Lance 825 on 3/4 ton truck?

There should be a sticker in your driver's door jamb specifying the payload for your specific truck, minus the weight of things you've added like bumpers and bigger tires. More specific, you should be able to go to any weigh station on the highway, or perhaps a junkyard that prices by weight...

    Better mileage...better performance?

Efficiency is something that the engineers would have increased if it were economical to do so, and performance is just energy output where the energy comes from the gasoline. More performance without increased efficiency means more gas required. You could probably wring out better efficiency...

Lance 650 again in the spotlight.

I share the concern about staying within manufacturer spec for payload. I bought my F150 with the HD payload option to give it a 3000lb rating so that it could carry a camper in the future. Sticking 2500lb onto a truck rated for 1700lb just seems to be asking for trouble.

    Crossing the Gila

Can you specify the route a little better? Who/What is ROF? I've been eager to explore the GNF from ABQ now that I have a truck.

    Solo/single person RTT available?

Most manufacturers have 1.2m width models that a couple of inches shy of a full-size mattress. EEzi-awn and Howling Moon specific call them 1.2m, whereas most of the other manufacturers have them as a separate line (Tepui Ayer is 42in, CVT Mt Bachelor is 48in, etc.) They usually have something...

    AEV Prospector

While I agree that ecoboosts are good truck motors, 15mpg is pretty weak. I have a 3.5EB F150, single cab and 8ft bed, 4x4 with 3.73 gears, and I've been averaging 19mpg for the first 2000 miles of its life with one tank at 22mpg.

What's your go to blanket for camping?

ComfortTech Stratton 3M Thinsulate Blanket. A little expensive, but it's machine washable (don't throw it in the dryer above minimum heat), comfortable as hell, and warm as hell. $100 on amazon for a king size that you can lose yourself in. I have two of them, my mother bought two after she...

Cases for or against extending transmission and trans-case breathers

I think you answered your own question. It's easily preventable and you're down there extending the rear differential breather, why not do the transmission, transfer case, and front differential at the same time?

    Choice of overland vehicle

Check out the Earthcruiser - I think they just started operations somewhere in Europe. Mitsubishi Fuso based camper - designed to fit within a shipping container. Four people might be kinda tight though, since it's only 20ft long or so.

Preferred photo hosting site? Photobucket no longer cutting it....

I did some research a couple of years ago and chose SmugMug for my photography, although sharing into forums isn't a high priority for me. As a test, see if the image below pops up:

    Thule Xsporter

Thule doesn't specify whether it's a static or dynamic load rating, at least not in their user manual, so I assume it would be the highest number that they could quote - the static/highway capacity. Any proper dynamic load failures could be explained away as due to off-camber situations off...
