What's the advantage of this over a ground tent, beyond not worrying about flooding? A tailer seems like a much better solution to the basecamp problem if a ground tent isn't your style.
I see the same thing. Downloads take FOREVER, with my VPN reporting traffic in the 2-5 kbps range with no other network usage to clog the pipes. I also have to keep the app on screen, and the screen on, otherwise the downloads seem to freeze or even corrupt. Switching between modes (download...
Changing the zoom level rapidly decreases the number of tiles downloaded for a map. The default zoom level for a download is 15 out of a max of 16, and dropping it to 14 reduces the tile demand significantly while still allow for navigation on forest roads. I wouldn't want to go lower than that...
I've thought about something similar, but with a pretty minimalist collapsible sidecar made out of tubing and canvas to keep the weight and size down for transport.
Does that sidecar have a driven or free wheel? Is there a reason you didn't run a tension cable up to the corner of the ambulance...
How did you find a 1033 vehicle for sale? My understanding is that selling stuff obtained through program is generally frowned upon by the agencies in charge of it.
Agreed. If the Tacoma were available with 2kips of payload after all the 4x4 options and such then I would have one rather than my f150. I'd have been fine with the 3.5L v6 as is, just make the rolling chassis stronger.
You can dive into semantics all you like. Hollow sections tend to have more of sudden failure than c-channels, sure. For a given cross sectional weight, and all else equal within the realm of a truck frame, failure of any sort will tend to occur later with a hollow section than with a...
Interesting video, but wouldn't the gap between the cab and the bed be heavily influenced by the cab mounts and have little to do with the frame strength? Most cabs that I've seen are isolated from chassis vibration via rubber or polyurethane that would be stressed in shear in an accident and...
Thanks for the update and initial review. I look forward to hearing about your longer term experience with those tires - I'll be shopping for tires in about 20k miles and I'm really tempted to figure out how to stuff the 37in version under my f150 without screwing with the suspension.

I really hope that they don't neuter the thing, but I'm also really pessimistic. Same platform and engines as the range rover means IFS at least. Independent suspensions can be done well for...
I don't much see the point to camping above the tree line in a strong storm. Why not just move to a sheltered location? Especially in a RTT when setup or take down take all of a couple of minutes each.
I say go for it, and post lost of pictures. I've been eyeing the mpt81 in the 37in size for my f150 once I've run through the warranty. They seem like great tires for a balance of on and off road, and you've obviously built a vehicle that can handle their weight.
Sleep diagonally?
I'm not sure that you're going to get more than 8ft wide in a folding tent since 4ft is already pretty wide on top of most vehicles. Have you looked into pop up tents rather than fold out tents? Stuff like the Alu-Cab tent would only have a significant slope on one end, but I...
Depends on whether you're planning a short term fix to get you to a shop after babying the rig, or a long term fix intended to maintain reliable operation over a long term.
For the short term, you should be fine so long as you're careful about heat building up in the axle itself rather than...
The chicken tax is a big reason - there is a 25% import duty on any imported trucks. Most of those trucks and such that you saw weren't made there but imported from a big factory somewhere else.
Basically yeah, medium duty trucks are the lightest that will carry a rated payload high enough for those big campers. A topped out f-350 could probably manage, but you're really looking at an f-450 or a fuso or equivalent if you want to carry a 5kip camper. If you to slide that into anything...
Suspension isn't the only part of being to carry a load, so just changing the springs won't safely allow the truck to handle more load. Even if you could, I can't think of a suspension design that can both carry a camper and not feel like it could carry a camper when unloaded.
The F150 has a...
