One major factor I would consider is the cost of replacement parts during ownership. Also aftermarket parts and support.
As for choosing which one, I happen to be a Ford guy...
If you can afford to do more while in there, by all means.
Keep in mind the EBPV does help in cold climates.
I wish Ihad done the cross-over line, i hear there are mixed reviews but for the price, couldn't hurt.
Taking out the turbo is rather easy and worth the time to make room to work.
I've done plugs and coils on a V10 Van a while back, what made it a bunch easier was pulling out the front seats. As well on working anything else through the dog house.
Most things, diesel or gas in the vans is by feeling....
What you heard about mechanics not willing to work on vans is absolutely true. As a matter of fact, about 4 months ago I called 5 places to fix a oil leak on my 7.3 van and theee of those phuckers actually hung up on me, two said no and the laat said he would call me back.
I had no choice but...
Skip that mechanic and get one that can properly diagnose the problem first. But yes I agree with everybody above, if need be replaced the 5.4 through the front. If my 7.3 can fit.... anything else will lol.
