Have you considered using aluminum trailer box such as those used in construction industry? There are many different sizes out there and from the looks of those would be much lighter then a y Uhaul box.. Just scrap the axle and wheels and mount on your truck For mounting ideas look underneath...

Have you heard of Total Composites ? They sell insulated plastic panels that asemble to make a camper box,,or even build one for you,located in Victoria BC I think? Sorry have no link,but they also post here so try searching for it..

I used to carry lots of tools and paint buckets when working in winter, made sure to place these way in the back,, even though had to jump over these when getting in and out,,its the only way to get traction with two wheel drive..works great..

I have to Disagree,,adding weight behind the rear axle gives one advantage you can use less of it,,then if you wanted to place it in the midle,forward of axle.. I Have two wheel drive Silverado with g80 locker aka positraction dif,,and I always load up bunch of concrete blocks,stones or buckets...

Aint no quick and easy way to build one off camper using any material.. Easiest to me as Im a carpenter, and something Ive considered doing,, would be to glue sip panels together and coat the whole exterior with best roof coating available..such as...

Fwiw If youre planning to glass both sides it wouldnt make any diference if its exterior or interior grade would it? Fiberglas would make it water proof.. I used similar cheap 1/2 inch plywood making my TC top,,used 3/4 inch ply for strengh on the botom and coated outside with Cold cure epoxy...
