Camper Frame Material - Aluminium or Steel?

The box is 13.5' l x 7' w x 6.5' h and is mounted on a 3 point mount like the one Carl designed for his FG and Big Foot camper. The truck, the camper, interior, 2 x 33 gallon tanks full of diesel, 3 deep cycle batteries, 18 gallons of water (now 30), spare tire, tools, spare parts, kayak...

Camper Frame Material - Aluminium or Steel?

My camper box is built with the same technique used here in America for enclosed trailers, car haulers, large truck / motorhome conversions, etc. A welded steel frame built from 1" x 2" tubing on 16" centers covered with .040" aluminum panels glued on with Sikaflex adhesive. Some builders use...

    Broken frame

Doug, Sorry you had a problem with your camper. I'm glad no one was hurt. I hope everything works out and that the trip continues. If there's a silver lining it's that we get to learn from your experiences. I read in one company's Body Builder manual (can't remember which one, but I read it...

    Broken frame

I don't think the 3 points increases the possibility of frame flex because for the allowable load (about 8000 lbs) the frame is supposed to flex to allow the wheels to stay on the ground. That's why the frame is riveted and bolted together and not welded into one rigid piece. The problem with...

    Camper questions

We have an Espar 5 diesel hydronic heater, a 6 gallon Indel marine hot water heater and 2 heat exchangers with 2 speed fans. The Espar can heat the hot water tank, heat the camper with the heat exchangers and / or pre heat the engine if necessary. The engine can heat the camper and / or heat...

    Alternatives to plywood?

Thinner plywood. A 3/4" sheet of plywood weighs about 75 pounds. MDF weighs more. A 1/4" sheet weighs just 25 pounds and an 1/8" sheet (or door skin) weighs only 12 pounds. Glued and screwed to a lightweight 1x2" frame (both sides if necessary to make structural panel) will result in...

    Got a problem

The dealer that performed the free service at 2400 or so miles forgot to tighten the front diferential drain plug. I didn't catch it until I was on a trip about 4000 miles later when I saw a small drip. Upon checking the drain plug had vibrated almost completely out - just a few threads left.

    Glow plug question

I started my 93 FG the other day when it was in the 20s F. The glowplug light came on. The manual says I should wait until it goes off and the crank the motor.

    Chevy Kodiak

Daimler still owns fuso. Don't confuse fuso with the mitsubishi car company. They're different companies. I read daimler was going to start making fuso's in portugal and india as well as japan.

    Snow chains on 4 x 4 trucks.

Chains are great for 4x4 dual wheels in unplowed snow or mud. That's why you see them on 4x4 skidders used by loggers off road. Get regular chains for the front and special dual wheel chains that cover the inner and outer wheel with one chain. I got mine at Napa. They will improve traction...

    Diesel hot water systems

John, Nice summary of diesel options. I have an Espar furnace, an Indel single heat exchanger circuit calorifier and 2 space heaters connected to the engine as you suggested. Some additional points: I use a "Ball" valve instead of a "gate" valve to isolate the engine from the furnace. You...

Expo Member needs help - tires

Doug, Glad it finally worked out with your tire problems. How much tread depth was left on the yokohamas? From the pictures, it looks like between the bad roads and your "weight challenged camper" there weren't many miles beyond the 26k you mention. You experiences remind me of a few...

    More design ideas/questions

In my FG camper I have an Espar hydronic 5000, an Indel marine hot water heater and a wallas diesel cook top. The espar and hot water heater are inter connected with the engine coolant system to provide engine pre heat, camper heat and hot water from either the engine or the espar. The wallas...

    Roof design examples and comment

Chip, Interesting question. I had a vw diesel westfalia pop top and the picture of the Fuso with the 2 white dogs is my second hard top camper on a FG chassis. We could sleep in the westfalia with the top down if we were trying to keep a "low profile". At 5' tall, my wife is short enough...

First Fuso FM from RUF Inc

The owners manual calls for 325 to 398 ft/lbs of torque. Who knows how tight the shop that mounted the wheels tightened them. Remember the lug nuts on the drivers side are left hand threads and you have to turn them the opposite direction to loosen. I ask the shop that mounts and rotates my...
