Great thread. I'm going to have to pick up a PLB. They're the perfect device for my own nightmare scenario: a vehicle fire or wreck while travelling solo in the backcountry. My commo system of choice for a non-emergency vehicle breakdown situation is a portable HF amateur radio. I'm not...

Liquid Logic Hoss kayak + accessories

It's a sweet boat. I kept saying that I was going to take lessons and learn to roll but never made it happen. This boat is cherry and I will throw in a Stohlquist PFD (used once) to sweeten the deal.

I've never used a torque wrench. I get them as snug as I can without going full Thog on them and shearing bolts or rounding nuts. Tight is tight. Too tight is two pieces. You can mark the orientation with the corner of a flat head screwdriver.

Land Rovers in Utah - 2012

Bill will have to answer that one. It's his Pelican. Me, I'm still lusting after his Jesus-shoots-Glock sticker.

Land Rovers in Utah - 2012

There are some folks who fit an auxiliary tank (an old Series part) under the passenger seat but it's only a marginal improvement and you have to hack the truck up to install it. The Tdi is a much better option.

If you have a grease fitting that you can't get to, you will need to remove that end of the driveshaft to grease it. You'll need two 9/16" wrenches for this task. It's simple: unbolt, grease, reattach. Having those wrenches in your kit is a good idea anyway. If you damage a diff or axle, you...

Land Rovers in Utah - 2012

We awoke the next morning to threatening skies. With fuel running low, we decided to make a push for Moab. Fuel consumption is quite limiting down here. My truck has a 15 gallon tank and I carry only two fuel cans; after two days of driving, I was bumming fuel from the rest of the group...

Land Rovers in Utah - 2012

The next day, we broke camp and headed for Dark Canyon and the Abajos. The plan was to cross into Beef Basin and camp there. We stopped on Elk Ridge and circled the wagons for some lunch. The brunt of the storm system was moving through and it was getting colder by the minute. We...

Land Rovers in Utah - 2012

The drive out... It was the standard haul across Central Colorado and fifth crossing of Monarch Pass for this old yellow horse. Since my drive to Utah follows one typical route, I like to look for new variations to get there. I left the pavement and the Paradox Valley behind and ascended...

Don't forget to fill your new oil filter with new oil about 2/3 full or so before installing it. Rub a little new oil around the rubber gasket before installing it, to help it get a good seal. I use only Land Rover Genuine Parts oil filters on my truck. I buy them in bulk from Atlantic...

Liquid Logic Hoss kayak for sale Gear is located in Colorado Springs, CO. I bought this several years back brand new from Backcountry.com and picked it up at their retail store. I never got around to learning and never even put the thing in the water. It's been sitting in my gear room...

Completed rear tire swing carrier for my LR3

Wow. Probably the first decent-looking LR3 tire carrier that I've seen. Nice work.

I laughed when I read his stress-out about the CVs. Axles were the first real repair job that I did all by myself on my truck. I was the rookie of rookies. I think it took me over a week and a half of evenings to just install heavy duty CVs, axles, DBA rotors, and diffs for front and rear...

Expeditionary Compass - Mounting on Windscreen - Maxing Out

That is truth. I shake my head every time I see an iPad or laptop mount in a truck. People install these things because they believe that they will improve direction-finding and orientation but they tend to have the opposite effect. There's nothing wrong with using an iPad for route planning...

Expeditionary Compass - Mounting on Windscreen - Maxing Out

I'm all for using a compass. Land navigation with simple tools is a lost art outside of the military. Map reading, terrain association, resection, etc. are great skills to develop and they take practice to maintain. I'm not a fan of that ridiculous giant compass, though. I don't trust...

    Antenna and mount question

That's a great setup, Ryan. That mount is very nice. I bought the same antenna, hoping to use it for my APRS tracker but I found that it did not perform well unless it was flush-mounted to a large ground plane, like the roof of a vehicle. I could never get it below about 3.0 SWR and had to...
