    In Praise of Pie Irons

I have always used the Rome pie irons and really like them. My Mrs. came home a while back with a pair of the original ToasTite irons she found at Goodwill for a couple of bucks and they work very well too. Being aluminum I would be a bit careful about using them directly in a fire for fear of...

A pretty decent video about how Harley-Davidson killed itself

Ouch-Sorry to say but that comment comes from some uneducated starting point. As a Harley rider with 3 Iron Butt rides under my belt and a trip up the Dalton Highway-all on a 1992 Low Rider which carried two weeks of camping gear along the way I would politely point out that it is not the...

    Klean Kanteen: Stainless Steel Bottles

I have a couple of these and have mixed feelings-my older ones that are "painted" have really just peeled and look pretty beat up, also have some rounding on the bottom of one-not sure if it froze or what happened-so for standard drinking bottle I prefer Stanley (my kids love Hydroflask-so call...

    4.56 or 4.88s?

Going through same mental exercise. I have 6 speed with 4:10s. With 35s I calculate 3:56s get me back to stock so going that way as was very happy with the combo. I think that will be great combo for road and trail. Now to add a question of my own anyone want to recommend a brand of gear sets?

How many of us bring dutch oven along?

Currently doing a tour of Southern Utah. So far cinnamon rolls in a 12 in shallow and this morning Jiffy cornbread in the 8 inch. Heavy no doubt but the 8 in nests isn’t the 12 and reduces the required space. In my mind a must have. This is the first trip I left the cast skillet home and...

    Camp stove

I had one in the past, assuming you are referring to the sportsman grill. I love cast iron and use Lodge frequently but I didn’t like this at all and ended up sending it to Goodwill. It was very heavy and unbalanced to carry, didn’t seem to get hot enough (no idea why), was sort of a pain to...

What are you using for a coffee maker and coffee brand when camping/overlanding?

I too am a fan of the Stanley Press/vacuum bottle combo-main problem is that I have the larger version and it does take up a lot of real estate-not a problem in the Jeep, but when I am on motorcycle I do use the instant coffee. Prior to the Stanley I used an old stainless perc pot (I think it...

    Coleman Campmate Craigslist Find $30

Joined the club I found a Campmate and lifted it this weekend on Craigslist here in Chicagoland. Paid pretty much as expected along with a propane stove, percolator and some other Goodwill bound items. It didn't have the original hooks, flatware, or papertowel rack (not sure how useful thoes...

Take me to School: Camp Stoves

I have carried a Coleman two burner white gas stove and MSR Whisperlite for 30 years-rock solid with proper maintenance. In the last few years I have added a solo stove that saves fuel use. Pretty much handles everything not cooked over the fire or the slat grill.

Ozark Trail "High Performance" cooler - any good?

I confess on day 1 I did not pre-chill, neither the Coleman nor Ozark. I did however keep constant, refreshed ice in them following that for over 10 days and the Ozark was, at best, on par with my Coleman Steel Belted and a no name task patio cooler from BJ's Wholesale and definitely trailed my...

Ozark Trail "High Performance" cooler - any good?

I gotta say my experience has been very disappointing with the 52 qt Ozark Trail HP. I purchased it a while ago and have used it straight for 10 days and out of all the coolers used for a graduation party, meat storage etc it has been the laggard. I knew I was in trouble on day two when I felt...

    Do you crumple or fold?

I long ago began to stuff, rainfly first, then tent, then footprint in order I will need to lay them out. I have had no trouble, but I do store the poles and stakes outside the tent bag-think if you put everything in the bag you could not stuff with the the poles already in there.

Any old school agrarians out there?

    Percolator coffee pot

Variables important Using a percolator is a real learning experience and takes some practice. Starting out make sure your grind is right for the percolator, a course grind. Once it starts to boil (perc) turn the fire down so that it only bubbles gently. After this you will have to practice with...
