    Warning re Jackery product quality/design

you mean the dead one? Though it may be that the battery is just fine, but the controlling electronics are not? Selling it hadn’t occurred to me. You just want the parts, or battery? What’s a reasonable value?

WFNH: Working from Not Home... Wyoming, then... ??

Been planning all spring to head up to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to photograph bears and then continue on wandering ... somewhere ... Montana, Idaho, Washington ... maybe? This trip would be difficult because it was multi-purpose and 5th gen 4Runners simply aren't all that large. The trip would...

    Warning re Jackery product quality/design

I'm in the middle of my third trip with my Jackery 500 and solar panel. First two trips: great. Third trip, this trip, not so great. Part of it is my fault, part of it is just plain poor product quality or design. My fault: I had the Jackery at the back of my 4Runner and it bounced around...

Sad End to This Cautionary Tale, As Folks Start to Head Back Out Into the Wilds, Pls Be Careful

I started with Spot years ago. Switched to Garmin InReach a couple years ago. Spot was crap with the absolute worst customer service on the planet.

    Mini rice cooker

I’m planning for this spring’s travel and wanting to do more stir-fry type cooking. Found a cute little mini rice cooker (does 0.5 to 1.5 cups (uncooked) of rice) for $25 and just tested it today running off my Jackery 500. Worked great! For 0.5 cups rice it maxed out at about 200 watts draw...

Sad End to This Cautionary Tale, As Folks Start to Head Back Out Into the Wilds, Pls Be Careful

That's a great-looking hike! And one that definitely could not be done without technical gear. Though note that the poster of that hike did it as a loop and the other way up wasn't as technical, so perhaps one could go down the way they went up...

Sad End to This Cautionary Tale, As Folks Start to Head Back Out Into the Wilds, Pls Be Careful

I served in the Army about a bazillion years ago and was reading this thread earlier and wondering whether colored smoke grenades were legal for me to own... though living out West I'd worry a lot about setting the place on fire...

Sad End to This Cautionary Tale, As Folks Start to Head Back Out Into the Wilds, Pls Be Careful

I'm a diver and actually have a Pelican strobe in a bin somewhere... don't use the thing because it's too damn annoying underwater and I can always signal my buddy where I am by waving around my primary or secondary light. Unless, you know, both fail... which has happened and makes things more...

Sad End to This Cautionary Tale, As Folks Start to Head Back Out Into the Wilds, Pls Be Careful

Wait, Gold Valley Road doesn't connect to Badwater Road? I'd been looking for Gold Valley Road and hadn't found it yet. So it's on the east side of the mountains by Badwater Road and doesn't connect? Then why in the hell try to hike through the mountains versus go back out the road? Are...

Sad End to This Cautionary Tale, As Folks Start to Head Back Out Into the Wilds, Pls Be Careful

I travel with a ton of lights... and have a foil rescue blanket... but will be ordering a panel marker and small strobe today to add to my kit. Thanks!

Sad End to This Cautionary Tale, As Folks Start to Head Back Out Into the Wilds, Pls Be Careful

Hope we get more details from the survivor over time. This is why I travel with my Garmin InReach reporting my position every 10 minutes to an online map which my family has access to. And I carry at least a week's worth of water. And I wouldn't leave my car. All of that said, if I ever get...

    Off-road office set up

I did my first "work from not home" last fall and am heading out again soon after I get my second COVID shot 12 days from now. I agonized over the WeBoost and whether it was worth the flipping $500 price tag, but ended up buying it and it has worked really well. It won't create network where...

    Off-road office set up

I go through my "work from *not* home" setup at 1:21 in this video: It worked great for me last fall in Utah and Wyoming. Granted by early November in Jackson Hole it was pretty cold, but nothing that appropriate clothing and a really good pair of boots couldn't handle. Let me know if you...

White Rim Trail - Utah - Feb 2021

Part 2 of the video: (Yes, I know... I have things to improve in the video department, and I really need a half-naked 20-something babe to come along and star in the video to get those views way up, but if you enjoy some great scenery along an awesome trail, check it out!)

White Rim Trail - Utah - Feb 2021

Looks like the backside of Murphy's Hogback. After coming up the frontside (doing the trail clockwise) and crossing over, I believe my quote when I saw the snowy shaded steep downhill hanging off a cliff was "are you ******king kidding me?" I had been so happy about making it up Murphy's Hogback...

Thanks, Dan. I’ve been a photographer for a long time... the video thing is new. Trying to teach an old dog new tricks! :-)
