2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

Project Ammo Can Mounting Purpose 1st gen DC Tundras are woefully short on storage space in the cab. I have no intentions of putting a topper on the bed, and no immediate plans for a rack. I prefer to keep the bed open because my truck gets used as a truck....carrying gravel, dirt, debris...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

Should I be considering a carrier drop spacer at all because of the lift? I'm probably 2 inches over stock in the rear. Or does the Hendrix bearing hang lower than stock? Also, wouldn't the polyurethane damper transfer more vibration to the chassis?

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

I wondered if this would be the case. Incidentally the driveshaft support bearing that was installed ~5k miles ago is squeaking now. Could this be related to incorrect driveshaft orientation? I'll find a time to pull the shaft and again and have the driveline shop assemble it correctly and...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

Tire fun! I've had the BFG KO2's on for a little over a week. While they are overall better mannered than the Duratrac's on the road, I noticed some vibration at 70 and above. Some shaking in the steering wheel and from the rear of the truck. Not consistent, but definitely noticeable when it...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

That's what I thought. I didn't end up changing it around because I didn't have the right tools to get the bolts out. There's no space for a socket on the double cardan joint, so I needed two long 14mm box end wrenches, which I didn't have. Plus I didn't have time.

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

I marked with spray paint before I took it off and got it back on the way it came off. It wasn't until I was re-installing it that I noticed that the two halves were out of phase. I checked the factory service manual and sure enough my driveline was wrong. It was like that before I touched it...

Did you do rubber gaskets by chance? Seems like that would be a good idea to keep water from getting to the unpainted metal.

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

Success at last!!!! At least 80% success....better than nothing! The driveline shop found that my driveline was out of balance. As soon as it hit 1200 rpm on the shaft there was some decent vibration behind the double cardan joint. He got the right weight on there and I picked it up today...

    Is the Tacoma enough truck?

Agree. When I camp, I throw a sleeping bag, pad, stove, and my pre-packed camp box in the bed of the truck. I sleep in the bed of the truck and the kids get a basic tent, so camp set up and take down takes 10 minutes each. Simple is best for me. Plus with family and work schedule I will...

I'd forgotten about the BucketBoss tool roll. Thanks for reminding me about it. I'm definitely going to get one.....just need to get more tools to put in it! Once rolled up do the tools stay quiet, or do they rattle around?

Is it attached to the floor of the bed? How did you go about doing that? My 1st gen Tundra has no bed rails, plus I worry that hanging from a bed rail would make it flop around like crazy when on washboard roads. I prefer the floor mount for that reason.

Good eye, I didn't see that until you pointed it out. If you haven't trimmed them yet a Dremel with a cut-off wheel works fine. If you need I can snap some pictures of how I trimmed mine. I'm curious to see how others did theirs as well. Nice ARE topper. I'd love to find one of those. I...

Mobile and Monitoring's 1st Gen Tundra

I'd like to see a little more detail on the Ham install. Specifically what did you do to mount the face plate where it is? And how did you run your power for the unit? And that looks like a Gamiviti hood mount? I have the same and love it. Going to do the same on the other side to replace...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

Got the new BFG KO2's on.....and they didn't solve the vibration. So I guess it wasn't tires after all. Bummer. Next up on the list was to check the drivetrain. I pulled the driveshaft, which was really easy. Never done it before. All the u-joints felt fine to me (at least from what I've...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

That's a great point. I don't think that will be an issue though because I doubt a full size spare will fit under there. I was planning on having the spare in the bed until I get the rear bumper, because it will be dual swing out with tire mount. If the spare still fits in the stock location...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

Project: Tailpipe delete Purpose: I got tired of seeing my factory tailpipe lamely hanging behind my passenger rear tire. With how far it sticks down it's only a matter of time before it gets caught on a rock or crushed. So time to trim. I'm not sure exactly how much I can trim off, so I...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

I would love my Duratrac's if they didn't shake the truck. I don't think that it's necessarily a problem with the design of the tires per se....it very well could have been my fault with lack of rotations, possible poor alignment, and one time that my lug nuts loosened while driving and the...

2005 Tundra novice build - "The Rez"

Thanks for all the suggestions for tires. Made my decision today and went with BFG KO2, 285/75-16. Costco made the decision easy.....$1085 for 5 (yes, five) tires mounted and balanced. That's a full $500 cheaper than any tire store near me. And now I finally get a full-size spare. They...

Help me decide if I should pull the trigger or not

I blew a head gasket on mine (actually I'm pretty sure the previous owner did, but it didn't show up until I started towing). The repair isn't cheap, but it does the trick. While they were in there I had them replace a my leaking manifolds to get rid of the tick. While they are in there with...

Mobile and Monitoring's 1st Gen Tundra

Longer shocks won't hold the bed up, they are only for dampening. Springs control the ride height. Most guys with 1st Gen Tundras carrying the weight you have in the back will use something like the Deaver Overland springs from Archive Garage. They carry the weight better, have more available...
