Need Advice: Modifications needed for hauling a camper?

I don't disagree with this. I was referring to the 2WD non-diesel trucks. All F250 diesels were considered heavy duty, IIRC. All of the non-diesel F250 HD trucks had the 7.5L as well just like all of the diesels were considered HD. I believe that all of the F350's had factory overloads but I...

Need Advice: Modifications needed for hauling a camper?

Some of the newer trucks come with a hole already in the bottom leaf but mine doesn't have the hole for mounting the Torklift bottom Stable Load. The centering pin is too far away from the gap between the bottom spring and the others to function as designed. Perhaps my springs need to be...

Need Advice: Modifications needed for hauling a camper?

Here's what I know even though I would like to get back to the OP's original question: I had a 1992 F250 HD that had a GVWR of 8,800 lbs. The leaf spring brackets on the rear of that truck were stamped "F350" so they were the same springs that came on an F350. It was a full floating rear axle...

Need Advice: Modifications needed for hauling a camper?

Torklift makes lots of stuff for truck campers. Here's the Stable Loads link: http://www.torklift.com/index.php/products/suspension/stableload The upper ones are what I have on my truck. The factory frame stops weren't contacting the upper overload springs early enough to do any good, so the...

Need Advice: Modifications needed for hauling a camper?

I'll take my own experience over a copy and paste from Wikipedia any day. Besides, the hazard light issue was fixed by 1997 and is not an issue for my truck. Regular maintenance and a transmission cooler will make any transmission last longer.

Need Advice: Modifications needed for hauling a camper?

I have 135k on my E4OD along with an auxiliary cooler and it pulls hard all day long. It does just fine loaded with my camper and is a strong transmission. I think you might be thinking about the AOD transmission. The E4OD is a heavy duty transmission and I have never had a problem with the two...

    Towing with a 10 footer

When using a hitch extension you must cut the tongue weight capacity in half. With an extension you are creating a great deal more leverage on the receiver than without it. We all know what you can do with a long pry bar, right? Also, you have to look at the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR)...

Need Advice: Modifications needed for hauling a camper?

My truck is a 1997 F350 with the 7.5L gas motor. It is 2WD and a dually with the factory camper package and a LSD with 4.10 gears. My payload capacity is the maximum offered that year at 4,587 lbs. The actual truck weight with fuel and passengers is 6,200 lbs. My GVWR is 10,000 lbs which means I...

    Multi-mount winch setup

I completely agree with everything you say. Once I twist the receiver off the frame I'll probably use a solid for mount the winch. :Wow1::Wow1: For now, I am satisfied that I at least have some chance at self-recovery before I have to call for help. I like what Boss did in the article above and...

    Multi-mount winch setup

Well, I decided to go with the multi-mount winch setup. I doubt I will ever use the winch so I didn't want to put a lot money into this. A cheap winch that may or may not work is better for me than an expensive winch that I will never use. I bought a Curt winch mount plate for my front receiver...

1986 Lance Squire LS3000 Overland Build

Great job on the restoration! It's strange how when you see this kind of repair work you start thinking how easy it might be to build your own from scratch. I know that is an illusion but these campers are not made out of rare materials. My Lance 990 is wood framed as well with aluminium siding...

    Multi-mount winch setup

Based on your comment, I revisited installing the spare under the bed. I had all brand new hardware to do it but couldn't get it to fit last time. So, I took a look at things again and found 2 holes that would work for hanging the spare. I'm not sure they are the right holes but they are holes...

    Multi-mount winch setup

I had found that site, too, while searching for solutions. There's a lot of fab work that guy did to achieve the end result. The basic design principal is pretty simple and doable on an OBS model. In fact, there are several channel plates for winch mounting available but I think most of them...

    Multi-mount winch setup

So I have been thinking more about this. I looked behind the bumper at the amount of space I have to mount a winch and it looks like there is room. However, I may have a better idea. I have been doing more reading on the physics of winching, even consulting the Army field manual for recovery...

    Multi-mount winch setup

You make it sound simple and I must therefore research this option now! ;-) I know a welding guy who could probably help me fabricate a solution. Thanks for the suggestion!

    Multi-mount winch setup

I have been in an email conversation with John Swyers at Warn about this issue several months ago and he confirms what you said about M15. It will work great with the Trans4mer winch mount. It looks like I can STILL have a 2" receiver and a winch using the Trans4mer system but it is unclear from...

    Multi-mount winch setup

Good point! I believe you get what you pay for and if you pay more for a Warn winch you are getting a better winch. I've heard people talk about Badlands, Smittybilt and other Chinese winches as "throwaway" winches. For the low cost, it makes sense. If you break one of the cheaper ones and have...

    Multi-mount winch setup

Well, it's good to know that I am not alone. I would PREFER a heavy duty Buckstop bumper that allows a permanent mounted winch AND a 2" receiver but it's hard to justify that kind of expense when I may never use it. I like the Warn Trans4mer grill guard setup for my truck but I don't think it...

    Multi-mount winch setup

I am probably going to catch a lot of grief for this but I plan to add a winch to my rig. The main reason I am choosing the following set up is because I only have one way to carry a spare tire. Currently, I have a Curt front mounted hitch on my F350 that is rated for a 9,000 lb straight pull. I...

Lance 860 emerges from the weeds

One of the first things I did to my truck was have the E4OD tranny serviced and added an auxiliary trans cooler. I also had the rear LSD serviced to make sure the clutch packs were not worn so I could have some confidence that it would work properly in low traction conditions. The cooler helps...
