Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

Lessons Learned So Far I've updated the first post with links to the posts about the mods so far completed as well as a list of planned future mods. The thread will go quiet for awhile now as I won't be able to work on the truck for a few months. Come this fall I will have the rare...

Swing-away jerry can mounts on a Tacoma rear bumper?

A thousand places do things like this. Where are you located? In So. Cal. one place is Demello Off Road. A company called Aluminess makes a bunch of swing out options for Tacomas as well. I think both CBI and All Pro have or are working on swing out bumpers too.

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

De-badging I'm very much a function over form kind of person, so this modification is a bit out of character. I do expect to have this rig for 20 to 25 years. I didn't expect the "TRD Off Road" sticker on the truck to weather very well over such a long period. I could certainly remove it...

    FlipPac mattress and "gap cover"

My brand new one works fine and always folds in properly. I never see anything sticking out the front edge (hinge edge) of the FlipPac when closing. I only need to tuck the sides and occasionally the very rear. How long it will stay in that condition I don't know! Sorry I can't measure the...

Raised Floor Alright, something that is actually a "build" rather just a "buy" now! For the bed build out there are many awesome examples on the forums. The new Goose Gear stuff that Dave is showing is pretty awesome. For right now though I'm pretty sure I just don't know exactly what the...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

@Scoutsider - Thanks for the warning! I was planning on doing a full seam seal on the SLO fly as well as the main tent. SLO does have a warning on their website that the fly needs to be seam sealed by the user.

Considering a Double Cab Tacoma - Should I be worried about the frame?

What year truck are you looking at buying? The frame rust problem is very real. Toyota is replacing a massive number of frames at great expense. It is certainly good that they are replacing the frames, but the fact that they are is also clear acknowledgement that for a number of model years...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

Yes, it is only relevant for when the Flip Pac is closed! If you have a breeze when open all those screened windows on the Flip Pac keep things nice and cool. But if you are just in the sun in still air - well it becomes an oven like most any other tent does. Yeah, with the DC it is sort of...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

FlipPac The real key to the entire build is the FlipPac. I wanted some sort of camper like build for family comfort and rapid camp setup and tear down. Pop up campers seemed too heavy for the Tacoma (though I know many people do use them on Tacomas). When I saw a FlipPac in Saline Valley for...

Console and Glove Organizers Still in the not so interesting category of "mods" are some nice organizers for the center console and glove box. Again, one of the benefits of the Tacoma and ten years with essentially the same model is a wealth of options in the third party market. These are...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

Floor Mats and Door Sills If I could have gotten a vinyl floor I would have, and in a few past model years you could. But carpet only for the Tacoma these days. The standard quality mat for a long time has been the WeatherTech and I was all set to go that route. But I soon learned...

Tires - BFG KO2 235/85R16 Since the truck is not a DD the question of tires is almost entirely about off road performance - though there could be long highway spells getting places too. Tread wear also not a concern as the vehicle is so low mileage tires will be replaced due to age before even...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

Buying the Tacoma So the story starts of course with buying a truck. In my case I had a 1992 Toyota 4WD regular cab long bed since 2000. The truck was not a DD, it was for camping only. And a number of years ago we relocated to the mid-Atlantic and so I'd left the camping truck in storage...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

Already tucked the truck back into storage in Las Vegas and am on the other side of the country from it right now :( Otherwise would have been happy to have you check it out. The bed caps are just plastic, so they aren't that durable if off roading with the 300 lb FlipPac resting on them. A...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

Actually it was a bit less than two months from order date to install date. They quoted me an install date about 7 weeks out when I ordered and they hit that date with no changes or delays. I didn't get any add-ons at all from FRP - just the FlipPac with no windows installed at their location...

Diet Taco Build (FlipPac on 2015 Tacoma DCSB)

Guiding Principle The Toyota Tacoma has a pretty pathetic payload and expedition builds tend to get heavy fast. So the guiding principle for this build is to keep the Tacoma on a diet. Don't bolt things on just because everyone else does. Carefully choose modifications that give the most...

My 2015 Toyota Tacoma DC TRD Off-Road

Years back I was deciding between a Toyota Pickup and a Jeep. After many months of research (there weren't many forums back then) what I determined was that Toyota owners never seemed to talk about working on their truck. On the other hand Jeep owners seemed to revel in the various trail...
