Re: Gas mileage. The thermostat housing cracked. And I always noticed I thought the temperature of the engine fluctuated way more than it should. So like anytime you have the housing off, I put a new thermostat in. What a difference! It's operates at the same temperature, it does not...

    OBS F250/F350 Flatbed camper build

I've been having battery placement dilemma. I have now seen enough rigs with the batteries behind the back seat. Looks like the way to go.

I know it was great when I first set eyes on it. If it's in good shape? Holy moly. Big fun.

    Project "Autonomous" F-350

Like, during your Death Valley excursion, trusting your GPS when it tells you can get to the Saline Valley from the Racetrack, via the Lippincott Road....in a sub-compact sedan. (This really happened recently.)

    Full size with service bodies?

It’s a Ford F350, havy duty model, a utility bed bolted to the frame, a slide in camper bolted to the frame. Weight is the biggest issue. And we are way under the GVR for that pick up. The thing seems to be holding up just fine. We check the mounting every time we come home, check it when we get...

    Full size with service bodies?

What I found, when searching for the right utility bed for our project, is the one you want is the shorter ones. Lower profile, with no tray on top. As utility beds go, they tend to be the lighter ones anyway as they are just smaller. As for mounting to the frame, we pulled it off an F-250...

    Full size with service bodies?

Thanks, Mike. You had what turned out to be the perfect FWC for what we wanted to do. Price was very right, too. 95% of the inspiration for this project came from this forum. I don't think I would have had the nerve to do this thing on my own, without the help and support provided herein...

    Full size with service bodies?

And speaking to the bigger subject pf ripping up the side of the body of your truck. Even some of my gnarly old beat up four-wheel drives I've owned, I didn't want to rip upthe side off the truck. I don't think there's any more likely to rip in the side off on a utility bed, but it would be a...

    Full size with service bodies?

When you're down to an inch to spare? That's where a good spotter comes in handy. My wife? God bless her. But, no. Thank God my son's growing older. I have him do it now.

    Full size with service bodies?

It's got to be heavier than a regular bed. But I think it depends on what you want to do. If you're going to go overlanding with a camper, and you want recovery gear and tools and such then you have to have somewhere to put them. Yes it's weight. But if you need those things out in the desert...

    Full size with service bodies?

When I was searching for the right service body, the one I found had piano type hinges. It was an older style. Like I said in another thread, the newer ones that just has a little hinge on the top and bottom, if you rip that top or bottom hinge off, the door will fall off. With the piano hinge...

    ‘93 F-350 utility bed w/FWC Camper

I looked at a bunch of front winch bumpers. They all seem too clunky and huge. We made that one custom. I wanted to keep it simple. I like the way it came out, thank you. It's simple. We do need to get some d-rings on it. I got snatch blocks but no d-ring to bring it back to.

    Full size with service bodies?

Our set up is an F-350 four-wheel drive crew cab long bed I found an old service body and stuck it on there then cut and welded the service body so we can fit an older Keystone FWC camper into it. Works great I love it, the tools and recovery gear are in the tool boxes. The clothing and bedding...

    2500HD Service body

Maybe I'm reading this wrong. Is there anyone out there seriously considering putting utility bed and a camper on a half ton? That would be insanity. We have a 1 ton with an FWC in a utility bed. Except for the gas mileage the thing is flawless. A minimum for utility bed in a camper...

    Project "Autonomous" F-350

Hah! No doubt. We saw one million of those things during spring break in Saline Valley. Noted quite a few being devoured by the local lizard population. Cycle of Life!

Bug deflector would be nice anyway for where we go. I'm a short guy. Climbing up on that thing to wash the windshield is an every day job.
