    New 2012 4Runner

Thanks. I had not thought of using the light mounts that way; pretty creative solution. The NMO itself is not so much an issue as just connecting it to the truck. I had more real estate on the 3rd gen. Thanks!

    New 2012 4Runner

So I just bought a new (to me) 2012 4Runner SR5. Its a big change in many ways from my 2001 4Runner SR5. The plan is to mount two NMOs which can be used for V/UHF (always) and hot swapping through GMRS, V/UHF DMR, and CB antennas as needed. I've run into a quandary in this plan though..... I am...

What Radio to Buy? Some tips to make a good decision

Looking at a 5th gen 4runner this weekend. If we go that route (and after I get out of debt from buying it lol) I may look at that brand for a GMRS antenna. Need to get a GMRS rig in the truck as all I have is Ham right now.

What Radio to Buy? Some tips to make a good decision

Points taken on FRS. I've never used Laird but I know they have a good reputation. I might offer that I should have been clear on the 102" whip. You mount it on the front bumper and tie the whip down to the rear of the roof rack with some non-conductive line. Acts as a brush guard and works...

What Radio to Buy? Some tips to make a good decision

All: This is my 2 cents on a really popular topic. I have been licensed more than 25 yrs and used a few radios, yearned for a few radios, and broken a few radios. Please add to this in the comments. Maybe we can sticky it and avoid the repetitive questions. Best mobile resource: K0BG.com...

    Tables under enclosed awning

Just a quick question. The ARB Awning with walls comes as big as 2500mmx2500m (which looks like about 8'x8'). What is the biggest size folding tables have people fit in the enclosed space comfortably for eating or socializing? Thanks!

    Microsoft Surface GPS?

No idea. Just looked it up on Google and there was a suggestion you could do this. I am getting access to an MS Surface Pro to play with soon (loaner from a friend) and would like to know myself.

    Microsoft Surface GPS?

Looks like on mapspro you can create a KMZ using Google Earth and then import it. Is this correct?

    Android and Ham Radio

DMR is an open standard. Mototrbo and Hytera implant that standard with extra whizbang features on top of that. In contrast P25 I believe, while a standard, is somewhat proprietary. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Android and Ham Radio

Icom doesn’t do DMR they do NXDN. Kenwood does DMR on the commercial side. Yaesu not sure because they were/are affiliated with Mototola i think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Android and Ham Radio

The argument being pushed is for Kenwood to take the TMD710 and add in DStar like the TH-74 handheld. You get the best of both worlds really fast. The sad part is Kenwood does not think there is a market for it. The DStar community disagrees because the Kenwood gear sounds much better than the...

    Android and Ham Radio

What do you use on HF? I am curious about whether you can integrate a tablet with an HF rig. Looking at either the TS480 or IC7100.

    Android and Ham Radio

I have a question for the group. I am an ardent Apple guy. I love my iOS and OSx stuff. I have used Android devices and frankly am not a fan. I do recognize, however, that it is an easier environment to work in for developing and innovating for amateur radio given how locked down iOS is (and...

New to APRS or new APRS gear?

No I would only use that device in an urban area with a lot of digipeaters, as a fox hunting device, or on a balloon flight. I'd get a GPS interfaced with your radio and go from there. Honestly the best of the best for VHF/UHF APRS is the Kenwood TMD710GA. It is simple and works right out of the...

    Internet on the Raod

I forgot this part. You are correct. Thus when you are in town you can send stuff from an internet cafe. I think you will find images and video are going to be really hard to transmit due to low bandwidth for many applications. Think dial up or DSL speeds regardless of of what is promised.

    Internet on the Raod

The Winlink data base should be pretty stable. If you need to update you can bring your laptop into the internet cafe. It should work fine. After all, just how are people updating databases in emergencies when there is no internet? I am no expert but I think you might be getting some bad info...
