Family of four, wait five. Looking for the (as close to) ideal camping setup.

What about a trailer with a roof top tent? Should save weight while givng you the ability to have a large area for sleeping. Negative: you loose indoor play space during rainy or buggy times. That could be offset by another screen house though. Just a thought.

iPad/iPhone users: Q's on the current software & hardware capabilities

    Baofeng Performance

Horribly unreliable. The Chinese radio that seems to be best is the Hytera DMR radios. Expensive. Most others have technical and reliability issues. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    2014 Tacoma uhf/vhf antenna mouunt

Actually the best is drilling the hole on the roof. If that is truly not an option (i.e. I now live in the land of parking garages) look at Larson Antennas. They have an NMO mount that you can put on the hood which should nicely fit in the gap between the hood and quarter panel which supports an...

How to obtain weather reports out in the field?

Not perfect but if really adventurous just get the satellite images from the GOES birds using WEFAX software on a laptop. Their frequencies for download are near 2m ham. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    FAA FCC radio license

No. You need a license for the service you want to use. The old GROL is akin to a General or Extra ham ticket in complexity Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    HF APRS

I had/will be reinstalling a Tarheel Model 75. Runs 10-80. Worked fantastic with the 480. Going to be eventually putting it on my new 01 4Runner someday. (Need to not work 80 hr weeks). Used it for years and loved it. Weld/drill holes but physically connect it to the rig. On my Escape I had a...

    Data Usage

My new iPhone 6Plus screen is fantastic for GPS use. I've not had to use it much but play with it during commutes now and then. I don't run full time because I am concerned about how intense GPS apps may or may not be as data hogs. Anyone monitored usage and gotten ideas on how piggish or...

    HF APRS

There are systems for HF. Expensive approach uses the SCS Tracker and a mode called Robust Packet. Not a huge following in the US but you have enough coverage to do what you want. The plus is this system also can do Winlink. Also there are folks using PSK63. This is more common in North America...

    Why do I want APRS???

One of the best is simple tracking but if you are remote you want HF APRS not VHF. You can do short messages to other hams or even emails now. (You need someone far more versed than I for that one. I just read about that recently.) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    Yaesu VX-7R programming question.

My question would be have you tested what you did? If yes, what did not work? Without the book in front of me try this cheat: Create two simplex channels. Put one for the VSQ and one for the PL. then set the vfos up to transmit using PL and RX with CSQ. Test that option. Sent from my iPhone...

    Yaesu VX-7R programming question.

Use the ADMS system. Yes you can hand program it, however, it's much easier to use the software to do it. More flexibility. Get the cable and adapter as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Looking for antennae bumper mount hardware suggestions

You will only get close to flush with an NMO mount. All others will protrude a couple inches. You'd drill a hole in a metal bumper and go from there. Must be metal or it won't work right. An NMO mount will allow for a cheap cap ($5?) on top that goes up about 1". Now for an antenna you can...
